I've tried to find a good, reliable and definitive source on how 1.3 handles 3D, and from what it sounds like, the typical issue with handling Frame Packing (Blu-Ray's 3D method) is that the pre-1.4 receivers do not know where to get the audio, so you need to use a separate method to send the audio (SPDIF).
The real problem is that a HDMI 1.4 receiver lacks the EDID info needed for 3D.
For example, my Direct TV's box 3D is simple half SBS. I can manually play half SBS files through my Blu Ray player via my HDMI 1.3 receiver and it works fine. But when I try the Direct TV's 3D it doesn't work because my receiver can't tell the TV and the Direct TV box "you are both 3D capable" so the Direct TV refuses to output in 3D.
