I've tried to find a good, reliable and definitive source on how 1.3 handles 3D, and from what it sounds like, the typical issue with handling Frame Packing (Blu-Ray's 3D method) is that the pre-1.4 receivers do not know where to get the audio, so you need to use a separate method to send the audio (SPDIF).

The real problem is that a HDMI 1.4 receiver lacks the EDID info needed for 3D.

For example, my Direct TV's box 3D is simple half SBS. I can manually play half SBS files through my Blu Ray player via my HDMI 1.3 receiver and it works fine. But when I try the Direct TV's 3D it doesn't work because my receiver can't tell the TV and the Direct TV box "you are both 3D capable" so the Direct TV refuses to output in 3D.

Ah yeah, there's that issue too.

When I was reading up on it, the usual suggestion depended on the device. For the PS3, they suggested to hook it up directly to the 3D (or in the case of my DLP, the 3D converter) and have it recognize 3D capability there. Then you'd hook it up to the HDMI 1.3 receiver and it would still think it was 3D capable.

EDIT:

But if it were me, the only device I'd use with 3D would be the PS3, so I'd just go from the PS3 to the converter and to my receiver. Given the converter changes everything to checkerboard for my DLP to process, my receiver could handle it just fine.

Get a Harmony remote. I'm not really even joking, it'll save you a lot of headaches. Expensive though, but you can often find decent deals.

i take it they are easy to use then?

There will be a bit of learning if you want to map out complex things, but aside from that, should be really easy (and often going through the trouble of mapping stuff out means you can just hit a single button later and it'll handle it all).

I have had good luck with my Denon AVR1712 receiver so far. It replaced my Onlyo TX SR607 because it came with Audysey MultEQXT and was on sale. There was nothing wrong with my Onkyo but it did run hot.

sadly the receiver is on its way to dying. and from reading at the onkyo forums this is common problem with their receivers. http://forums.onkyousa.com/viewforum.php?f=34
regret getting it now, shopping for new one as i am not sure how much longer this one will last.

The audio on my Onkyo HT-RC360 died during the BCS championship game. When I pulled it out of the cabinet is was fairly hot. Anyways, replaced it with a Denon E300 that was on sale at Frys for $220, and its been pretty good. I couldnt see much of a difference between the E300 and a refurb 1613, so I went new. I think I am done with Onkyo. I used to buy them because they were cheap refurbed, when I researched the possible causes for the failure I got the impression that these receivers are just unreliable. Probably explains the abundance of refurbed Onkyo receivers on the market.

I've been really happy with my Pioneer VSX 919 AHK. It never gets really hot, but if I accidentally block a very small portion of the vents a fan comes on.

If I was buying now it would probably be the 823

I think Pioneer SC-1222s were going for like $450-500ish a few months back, not sure if there's a new model with a similar price point. It would have been hard to beat given it's power output from it's Class-D amps.

Edit: sometimes Costco has good deals:

The non-class D Pioneers are going to be a big step down in real watt output. If you drove the Onkyo hard, you *will* notice.
