You should try a little known game called Singularity. I consider it one of the great "finds" that I've ever come across in gaming.
You play as an American soldier who explores a Russian island while phasing between the present and the past. There are no stats, only limited "perks"; you upgrade them, your weapons, and the device you use to manipulate time in whatever order you want to with money you find lying around. After I finished I sought out some reviews and some stuffy britches complain that there are similar gameplay mechanics to HL2. It's true but doesn't affect the enjoyment of the game.
Singularity is one of the most fun games I've can remember playing. It's like stumbling upon a cheesy action movie on the couch one lazy afternoon and being riveted until the end. That's kind of what happened to me with "Serenity". I didn't even know what Firefly was when I saw it channel flipping and it hooked me from start to finish.
