Need some help choosing a good LCD

Hi,

I need some helpful guidance on choosing a LCD i have basically narrowed down my choices too two LCD's

The first one im looking at is the
Philips TFT 19" 190S5FS

And the the second one is
Samsung TFT 19'' 910n

I want to spend roughly 500-650$ on the LCD, and i will mainly use it to play Games and watch Movies, so i preferably want a LCD with little ghosting, if you know any good reviews that i can read about any these LCD's or have tried them yourselves can you please give me some insight in to how they are...

Im also open to suggestions on other brands if you know better LCD's in the same price range, preferrably one that you can find on this site=

I know you have narrowed it down but also look in to the ViewSonic VP912B

If you choose Philips, don't get S, get B.
B with DVI and adjustable stand is just ~$20 more than S.

Add the sony hs94p to your list. It uses the same screen as the viewsonic vp912b but has a 500:1 contrast ratio instead of 450:1. Not that it's a big difference but I also just prefer the sony brand for displays more. Either one will be your best choice for gaming and movies.

The Philips 190S5FS
has a 12ms resbonse time so i guess its pretty decent, but i havent managed to find and review about it so its just speculation really... Does any one own one, and want to vouch if its decent or not?

I just happened to stumbel upon this LG LCD TFT 19'' L1915S, any one have any comments about it, or know how if it is good..?? it has a 12ms resbonse time which is should be good for gaming if it is accurate

The 910N does not have DVI, it makes not sense to get it when the 910T (same panel w/ DVI) is available for around the same price (about $150 lower than your budget). Then again, I may be just saying that.

Definitely look into the VP912b and other 12ms 19" panels. The VP912b first quiets nicely at around $600.

I second the Sony HS94P. Have had mine about 4 months after upgrade from NEC 1760V. The NEC was a good panel, but the Sony is awesome.

I play America's Army, AOC and Far Cry with no probs.

Hows the ghosting on the LCD's??

The ghosting is barely visible on the sony hs94p, you have to actively be looking for it to notice it. This is my first lcd upgraded from a 21" sony g500 so I was skeptical about the negative things of lcd's but they're not bad at all. I play cs:source, doom 3, warhammer 40k, ut2k4, etc and they all look and play awesome on this display, and I'm quite critical when it comes to things like that.

Another question is will ingame graphics look really crappy if i dont run them in the LCD's native resolution. If i have to run all games in 1280x1024 for it to look decent that will mean i will have to take some serious FPS hits in certain games... Since I ussualy run my games at 1024x768, so that will kind of play a part in choosing a LCD, is there any difference here between the LCD's or do thye all need to be run in there native Resolution to look decent?

Thx for the link but i have allready read the thread and although related it dosent answer my question about if there is any difference between LCD's regarding the image quality if you dotn run them in there native resolution..

P.s If i want the best overall image quality, but want to run the LCD at a lower resolution than the native resolution(1280x1024), what is the optimum resolution to run at?

Yes it does, I even replied in it.
"Scaling isn't always crap. I know if I go down in resolution (but keep aspect ratio the same), it looks ok to me. Even my NC6000 laptop looks ok if I scale down this way. Of course it isn't quite as good as the native resolution, but with a decent pixel density it isn't nearly as bad as it once was. "

In my experience (on a newer LCD), the image quality is pretty good when scaled down. This is -if- you keep the same aspect ratio (4:3 or whatever). It isn't as good as the native, but I didn't think it was that much worse...and it is a lower resolution anyway so I guess we shouldn't expect it to look quite as good.

Ok, yes sure but im aksing if there is any difference between the LCD's (Models) that have been mentioned above..

Ps. But what you are also saying is that if my native resolution is 1280x1024 5:4 ratio as long as i scale down keeping the aspect ratio the same 4:3 etc.. the overall image quality wont be too bad? how big a difference are we also talking about here? does any one have a link to a screen shot comparison or anything?

Hikari btw since you seem to know your stuff, what 19" LCD would you reccomend in the $500-$650 price range? is the Philips or Samsung that i mentioned in the beggining any good? and how big a difference is DVI compared to VGA connection.. I know most these models can be found with both, unfortunately where I live i will need to throw in an extra $100 or so to get a LCD with a DVI connection.. Is that worth it ?

I just bought the Philips 190S5FB and it's the best monitor I've seen for the price. The quality and performance will rival many of the monitors costing $200 more. I took a chance and ordered it online based on a few pictures and a few personal reviews. I wanted a good size LCD monitor for gaming and didn't want to pay $700 for one. What I got for $450 exceeded my expectations. There is no ghosting, the colors are rich and accurate, and the colors don't wash out when there's quick changes in lighting or when explosions occur in games. My model doesn't have DVI, swivel, or a height adjustment but if you want a monitor that doesn't break the bank, has quality construction, and performs with the best of them then this is your monitor. You won't be disappointed.

Awesome sounds really good, thx for the info... Its really hard to find any kind of reveiws about the Philips 190S5FB, so its great to hear from some one thats its performs good.

I checked out Viewsonic, Dell, Sony, etc. and not one of them performed significantly better than this one for $200+ more. I have a 15" CTX LCD monitor (2 yrs old) on my wife's computer and she thought it was OK until I got the Philips. Now she always on my computer, so I'll probably have to get another one if I ever want to do any gaming again.
