Ok, I need an idea for a dish of Spanish origin do cook for a Spanish II project due next Friday. I have pretty good cooking skills (for a sophomore in HS) and if I'm stumped my mom can always help me. Anyway, the less complicated the better since I have to fix enough (in small portions) for about 15 people.

Thanks everyone,
Swan

Arroz con pollo (Chicken with rice) Easy to make and sounds really authentic (well, it is....) Paella is another good choice.

I agree that paella would be a good choice, but if you are going to make "real" paella, you'll need some saffron (which is very expensive). Paella is awesome though, so at least you'll have a good meal/snack when you're done

paella is nice, but expensive cause of the saffron and all the seafood involved. Plus you need a big ceramic dish thing to bake it in, buts its so damn good. Try making flan, thats spanish i think and its relatively easily and everyone will love it.

Just got back a few months ago from a honeymoon from Spain (2nd time there - I was about your age when I visited it the first time 20 years ago - absolutely incredible country!!!). Here's a few suggestions:

Gazpacho (easy to make)
Tortilla espanola (the link provided above will work well)
Flan (another good idea posted above)
Manchego cheese (gourmet cheese shop should stock)
Serrano ham (found at gourmet shops; Iberico ham is better but mucho $$$$$)

I would definitely stay away from paella. It would be difficult to prepare in class, and reheated would -shudder- taste nasty.

Too bad it's not college...Sangria rocks

Have fun! And visit Spain some day...you'll never forget it.

Thanks a lot everyone. The paella has been done about a million times in our class, so I think that's out of the question. I think I'll do either flan or gazpacho.

I'd go with the Arroz con pollo.
But the easiest and best tasting would be Platanos (sweet plantains). All you have to do is fry those damn bananas

I'm not sure if arroz con pollo is Spanish. I've always considered it Peruvian.

If you're making it in class, gazpacho is going to work a lot better than Flan (which will need time to set.

You'll need to practice with a knife, or just bring a food processor/slap chop to dice your vegetables.

Looks like paella is out, so it leaves quite a few other didhes. Other than the gazpacho, tortilla, flan, I'd consider:

-Gambas al ajillo - Shrimp sautéed in butter and heavy garlic.
-piquillos rellenos - stuffed piquillo peppers, stuffing of your choice

-my personal favorite: rabo de toro - oxtail stew. Doesn't get much more Spanish than that.

Edit: didn't see the dare on the op. But I'll leave this recipe here anyway.

How about picadillo?

My great grandmother's recipe (she was Cuban) calls for:

1 onion
1 green bell pepper
3 garlic cloves
Chop them up and brown them in a skillet with 1/4 cup olive oil

Then add 2-3 small boxes of raisins and 3 to 5 oz of green olives. Cook them a little bit.

Then add ground beef. Cook this through, then add a little lemon juice (usually ~1 tbsp) and salt to taste. Serve over white rice.

You can also add capers with the olives. And sometimes, I throw in a few jalapeños.
