I've been running hard for the past 2 weeks cause I'm leaving in 17 days. Monday- 2 miles; Tuesday- 2 miles, 4-100yard sprints; Wednesday- 2.5 miles; Thursday- 3 miles; Friday- 4 miles; Saturday- 3 miles; and Sunday - 1 mile. Thats my workout currently, however, I've been developing a pain in my left leg....I thought it was shinsplints buts its kinda under my shin. Heres a pic . It hurts when you push down on it, and its kinda swollen compared to my other leg. Its just a little area though, it hurts a little when I run. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I forgot to mention I'm icing my leg at the moment.

I am not a doctor but I do a fair share of running. you might be suffering from shin splints or it could just be a pulled/damaged muscle in your calf. i actually had a similar problem where the muscle next to my fibula felt very tight when i started a run, then tailed off as it went on. i recommend:

1. make sure your running shoes are in good shape and right for your running style. you would not believe how much of a different this makes
2. try masssaging and stretching both your calves a couple times a day. if will loosen the muscles up and help bloodflow to the affected area. this actually helped me a good deal, espectially right before a run.
3. try some excercises that work on stabilizing muscles in your feet and legs. roll up a hand towel tightly and stand on the roll so that the long direction parallels your foot and balance for 10-20 seconds at a time. a bosu ball is a better option than the towel if you belong to a gym and they have one.

i doubt from the mileage that you a running that it is shin splints but if it still concerns you, try running on softer surfaces like grass or dirt trails.

hope that helps.

It hurts right on the shin bone on my left leg. Its not infront, its the right side. I've been running on the concrete for awhile, but I dont think its that cause I'd have it in my right left too.

Did you just start that program from scratch or did you gradually work up to it? Your body needs some rest days. I would throw out the shorter runs and take at least 2 rest days during the week. Perhaps something like 2-3 days on, 1 day off.

If the pain persists I would definitely find yourself a good sports doc. I have run lots off and on over the last 25 years or so, used to run a 35 minute 10K back in my college days. I have had plenty of aches and pains, but I have never had pain in that area. I myself would be worried about a possible hairline stress fracture that will only get worse with time. Hopefully it's nothing that bad. In the meantime, freeze some dixie cups full of water and give that area a good 10 minute ice massage 3 times a day or so - and take some anti-inflammatories.

Ive been running for awhile now, Cross-country last year and still running but not that serious. I've been training till my shipdate. I hope its not a fracture, I've never had one before. I've had shinsplints before, this could be a different form of them. Its on the shin bone, but on the right side of it. Lets see if it acts up tomorrow morning....hopefully not as bad as today.

I'm shipping to Ft. Leonard wood, Missouri for 14 weeks for basic training and AIT. I'm laying off of it for awhile, taking some Adleve, icing it, and using some icy-hot pads....

Going into basic with a stress fracture is seems like a very bad idea. I would use this time to rest the leg and do the cardio in less impactful ways. Maybe try cycling, swimming, or rowing.
