Hello All I am new to this but thought I could find someone with some helpful advice and knowledge here...I am not even sure I posted this in the right place so take it easy and don't flame me too bad! lol....I have a Craftsman 1/4 inch rachet that I am guessing it is at least 35 years old and it was my late fathers and it is locked up..It is the V series and has a flat back with no socket release button on it..I took it to Sears and they said it was too old and didn't have a kit for it...It goes with a set that has a little metal box with sockets and a small breaker bar and extensions and I want to keep it together if at all possible...Didnt know if there is anywhere I could find the kit or what>>Sears said they would replace it but there is sentimental value here plus I know the new ones aren't made no where as good! I am gonna try to post pictures! Any suggestions or advice sure is appreciated!! Thanks!

Your best bet is eBay. I'm surprised sears didnt give you the option of replacing it with a newer style.

That's a good ratchet, I don't blame you for not wanting to break up the kit.

You might try another sears. I've found that their ratchet part selection is not the same across different stores.

You could also disassemble it yourself.. If it's just locked up you might be able to soak the parts in oil and get it working again.

I would hang onto it. You may soak it in some PB Blaster or WD40 and getting it working. Even if it dont work, I would keep it.

Unlike Sears to say something like that. I had an older ratchet that just spun. I took it to Sears and they actually gave me the option of a kit or a new ratchet. I didn't want to fool with a kit, as the rest of the ratchet had a bit of rust. I asked for a new ratchet. They replaced it with their current ratchet. Didn't cost me a penny. That is why, on many tools I elect to purchase them at Sears instead of SnapOn or Matco. I've returned broken screwdrivers and cracked sockets to Sears when I know SnapOn or Matco would have refused me. That is just part of the Craftsman lifetime warranty.

Snap-on has alwys replaced my screw drivers -even if I used them as a pry bar.
As for sockets, they seem to wear out after a few years of use, but they don't crack like a MAC tends to.
Then again I don't use chrome sockets where an impact is called for.

My SnapOn guy will always replace screwdriver tips and give us the benefit of most doubts, but if he sees any abuse, like using a scerwdriver as a crow bar, or using a chrome socket on an impact, he might exchange it once, but won't continue to do so. Our SnapOn guy will bring up the SnapOn warranty which is:

"During the applicable duration of the applicable personal use warranty, at its option, Snap-on will repair or replace its Products which fail to meet the personal use warranty standards, or provide a refund by repaying or crediting Customer with an amount equal to the purchase price of such Products. Repair, replacement or refund shall be at the election and expense of Snap-on, and is Customer's exclusive remedy in place of all other rights and remedies."

Now, compare SnapOns warranty to Sears:
"If this Craftsman hand tool ever fails to provide complete satisfaction, it will be repaired or replaced free of charge."

This is why I more frequently purchase tools at Sears. They will take back anything that fails to provide complete satisfaction! Hard to beat a warranty like that.
