Need some job advice

Need advice about a job. I just went through interviewing and was offered a job at another company. A small bump in pay compared to what I am making now. I accepted and I am not supposed to start for a month.

Now the kicker is, my current employer found out when references were being checked and this has prompted them to offer to keep me by doubling my income, salary plus commission, with another position. July 1st would be the start date. I waited for this sales position to come open for 9 months and decided to look elsewhere after being tired of waiting which I think prompted them to hurry up and expand the sales team.

I have had a similar position in the past with a previous employer and excelled at it

Current position low 30k’s
New Employer mid 30k’s and 5 minutes from home
New position with current employer 60k-70k. Still a 30 minute drive to work.

Ummm, this is a no-brainer. Why should you have allegiances with the other company that you haven't worked for?

Its sales. It gets old, really fast. Totally goes against my personality and dread it the whole time, but the money is ridiculous.

$65k is good pay but if you're not going to be happy it may not be worth it.

Talk to the new company and say you were made a hefty counter offer to stay. See what they do about your pay. If they offer you more, take what will make you happy.

So 5 mile away job would be less stress full/perhaps more fulfilling than the 65K job? Any feedback on how long employees last in the newer company? Where do you see yourself with them in a few years? Go for whatever makes you happy. For me $$$ isn't everything, your health is.

Obviously take the 60k job. Worst case scenario you get fired and your unemployment is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than if you were to take the new job at 35k and have it be a disaster.

No brainer. Next life question I can solve for you without even thinking about it for more than a few seconds?

Go with whichever will make you happier. Money isn't everything. It just makes it easier to pay bills.

This. At first glance it seems a no brainer on the 65k job. But i dont have enough info about each job to determine if its worth it. The 5 min drive vs. the 30 min drive doesnt swing me one way or another at this time. MOAR info needed.

You sound like you are happy at your current company (waited 9 months) and only went looking because of the lack of realized potential. If that's the case I would inform the new company of your alternative offer and your intent to accept the promotion.

I would take the 65k regardless, but I guess it depends on how much you actually hate sales.

Just to put things into perspective, the average household income in the USA is ~$50,233.00.

So you would be going from below average (though you are only 1 person and not a household) to well above average.

If it were me, I'd take the 65k, suffer through it while building savings / IRA, retire early, and live off the savings until the IRA is available with no tax penalty.

Alternatively, if you can live off 35k a year, you would have that entire amount per year as disposable income at the job you don't like. You could probably find 30k worth of stuff to buy each year to make you happier about having a job you hate.

This plan, of course, changes if you meet some chick down the line.

Wow, that's a really shitty life if you ask me.

Hate your life until you get old and die.

Beware. Managers will often use counteroffers as a means of keeping you on board just long enough to replace you at a more convenient time. I don't know the dynamics of your organization, but I have a pretty hard time believing that a counteroffer with a 100+% increase in salary is legit.

I'd go with the new job unless you're absolutely 100% sure that your current company isn't going to terminate after a month. Good luck with that :awe:

If i have been at your place i would have surely continued the current job. The main thing matters is money and time you have spent in your last job. This is the main consideration before you are hired in next company or given promotion.

When you are getting a hike as well as promotion in this job then why bother and join other job??

Interesting thread. I had a similar situation about 2 years ago.

Salary at that time: $40k + OT. Probably did about $50k+ consistent but had to work OT to get it.

They hired remote employees and they denied me applying for it, said I wasn't qualified.

They hired someone without the qualification they said I didn't have. I was pissed. I was already working out of house due to no office space at the time (remodeling - and they weren't sure if there would be room after). But they wouldn't let me move where I wanted.

I applied at a sweet company, and got an offer of $67k.

Told my current work let me move or I jump ship. I sent this e-mail on the weekend and even got a response within hours from my manager (she didn't normally work weekends). They offered to pay for my move.

I asked for more money and they shot me down real fast. I then had to decide between moving back to where my family lived or take the raise. I had pretty much already decided that I wanted to move home, but it still sucked to lose the salary.

What made it worse is over the years, my friend that worked at the company I applied to got massive raises - Over $20k in 3 years. I can only imagine I'd be near the $85k mark by now. I did end up getting a raise when I moved and making near $60k at the end of the year, but right now I'd be better off. This year I'll get close to $75k working out of home which I cannot complain. But that is only due to awesome bonus from this past year.

That being said while it sucks to think about a higher consistent salary, I value the proximity to family more than the money when it comes down to it. I don't regret it, even though I think about it from time to time when I'm not happy with my current company.

Hopefully there is something you can take from that story, even though it was lame.

I would have fired you for noobing on something so simple as not putting your current employer as a reference when job hunting. But it looks like it became a winning lotto ticket. Cash that shit in and take the $60k job.

Thanks for all the replies.

I didn't give my current employer as a reference. They went ahead and called my manager...that was awkward, but it got me this offer and I am going to take the sales job.
