I searched around, but did not really find any decent threads, so I'm making my own.

I listen to most genres of music and have accumulated a decent collection, but I've noticed I'm a little thin in the metal/prog/whatever area.

Things I like with linkage for those that are unawares:

Neurosis (one of my favourite bands ever)

Isis

Opeth - duh!

My Dying Bride

Riverside

Porcupine Tree

Anywho, if anyone could recommend some stuff in the vein of what I've linked to. I do like bits and pieces of some of the faster stuff like Chimaira, Nothingface, and even the occasional In Flames song, so I'll take recommendations in that vein as well.

Don't worry about old school stuff like Maiden, Priest, good Metallica (MoP and earlier) as I have all of that. Also I have tonnes of punk so I don't really need anything there.

Thanks in advance for any and all recommendations.

Cheers,
KT

you have some great taste there, I'm a big fan of all of those bands you listed... check out calisto (album is called noir) if you like ISIS/red sparowes, et al.

this is kind of a departure from your list but if you like really proggy hardcore flavored metal I would check out Between The Buried and Me's new album Colors.

also check out enter by the band russian circles..

check out pelican as well

I heard there's a new Alvin and the Chipmunks album out, that should be pretty hardcore.

Good bands... Riverside is a gem! More people should know about them... Lets see... You should look into:

Redemption
Royal Hunt
Symphony X
Voyager
Xystus

Let me know if you want more suggestions

I see people talking about hardcore up there.. I hate hardcore, so all the stuff above is prog/power metal just so you know

Well, not sure if it is your cup of tea but you can try the following:

Amon Amarth
Scar Symmetry
Ankla
Sepultura
Soulfly
Deftones
High on Fire

Have at it.

cool, if you haven't heard red sparowes before I would start there. It's all the members of ISIS but no lyrics, just the droney monolithic landscape type shit but a bit less doomy.. more like explosions in the sky but heavier.

russian circles reminds me a lot of ISIS as well except they are much more progressive (not super prog, but they make more changes). they have great buildups/breakdowns as well.

callisto is a treat.. the album is a bit hard to find but it's totally worth it, very beautiful/menancing at the same time.

pelican is fantastic as well although a lot more droney than anything listed

if you REALLY like doom/drone type stuff, check out sunn 0)))
they make me feel uncomfortable but they're brilliant at the same time.

Sunn O))) are a joke lol I mean, sure they get points for innovation, but jesus, a song that sounds like an airplane engine starting isnt very musical is it? Same for playing a note every 10 seconds LOL Oh well to each their own, its something I will never get... Then again, theres a reason why its called NOISe.. sure its noise, if people like noise I have no problem with that, but dont call it music!

So far so good. I've started listening to Redemption and I like what I hear. I'll make my way through the rest.

It's definitely uncomfortable to listen to but it's great every now and then.. they have a lot of stuff, a lot of it is really hard to listen to, other stuff is actually great. It makes me feel ill if I listen to it in headphones. That's actually their aim at their live shows

I don't really like Deftones or Soulfly. I saw Sepultura play with Clutch and Ministry many moons ago and they were very good. Have not really listened to them since then though. I'll check out the others, thanks!

I like some Anathema, but I don't really enjoy their newer stuff so much, it kind of became a little too, um, wimpy? Not sure if that's the right word, but that's sort of how it feels.

I'll check out Katatonia though, thanks.

Sepultura, Clutch and Ministry at the same show? That's a pretty unique lineup. That should have been a pretty fun show.

I'm still a sucker for some old school Testament if I want something dark and heavy.

The Leviathan albulm by Mastadon is great too. I like several tracks from the Blood Mountain album, but it's not as strong as Leviathan IMHO.

both are great, I really like Josh Homme's additions to blood mountain. Leviathan will always be my favorite record by them but BM is pretty fantastic in a different way.

Homme drums on Colony of Birchmen and gives it that awesome stoner metal feel, very stark contrast to their normal stuff but it works so well

Yeah, Clutch opened to a relatively small crowd as I believe Pitchfork was the only album they had out at the time, sonot a tonne of people had heard of them (yeah, showing my age here a bit), they put on a good show though. Sepultura followed (very good, high energy, the crowd was very into it), then Ministry (they were awesome, had everyone going crazy) and they even had Gibby Haynes there to do Jesus Built My Hot Rod; the place exploded when that happened. It was one of my favourite larger shows that I've been to.

I have Blood Mountain, which I enjoy about 50% of. One track on it, that I can't recall the name of, really blows me away, but there is a bunch of lackluster stuff as well. I'll have to get Leviathan though if it is as good as you both say it is.

It's a prog metal concept album about Melville's Moby Dick, how can you lose?

It's OK to be thin in that genre, cause it's all crap. don't listen to that Platypus, either. he'll steer you down the wrong direction

BM took me about 5 spins through to really "get it". Colony of the Birchmen is probably my favorite Mastadon song of all albums...which strangely enough is also their most radio friendly song. Definitely dig the stoner rock vibe of the song.
