been listening to too much mainstream rap, can anyone recommend me some rap/hip hop that's more true to the heart and soul? i.e. songs with awesome lyrics, ideas, meaning & complexion as opposed to the boring mainstream music about hoes, $ & crack...thx

p.s.: doesn't have to be very recent too, i'll take anything from the last decade or so, probably won't know much of it but i'll try to learn to like it lol

If you want Gangsta Rap, definitely check out N.W.A., Dr. Dre (The Chronic and 2001), and Snoop Dogg (Doggystyle). But, I got sick of Gangsta Rap and listen to Underground Hip-Hop, such as Jurassic 5. All these artists are great; check them out.

Is Jurassic 5 still considered underground?

Atleast spell Kweli right.

And I doubt you'll find many good suggestions here, ATOT is a notorious gang of rap hating people that love the idea of grown men looking like monkeys screaming unintelligible banter.

That being said I've been downloading a lot of TI recently, including his new song Top Back.

As wel my other favourite song right now is Want You by Lloyd Banks ft. Lil Wayne

The first four replies were nothing but suggestions. And so far in this thread there hasn't been any rap bashing at all.

I'm sure there will be some bashing, but ATOT bashes any opinions.

I know, but I'm getting my preemptive strike in first, because I know it will happen.

The worst thing is I don't go into any rock threads saying it sucks, sure, it's not my favourite thing to listen to (quite frankly I'm an equal opportunity kinda listener) but everyone has unique tastes.. I'm not gonna bash anyone over it.

ATOT just loves bashing rap more than many other things.

The Roots, Hi-Tek, they do some good stuff...

If you're looking for soul stuff, i really reccoment "Jill Scott - Who Is Jill Scott" and "Lauren Hill - The Miseducation Of"

To add to what's already been said: Soul Position (RJD2 + Blueprint), Mr. Lif, El-P.
Also, K-Os was already mentioned but I'd also recommend him as his music is a unique and refreshing blend of hip-hop, rock, reggae, jazz, etc.

I'd say ATOT bashes "emo" more so than rap. Now, ask yourself what these things have in common. They are both mass-produced, high-crap-content products that execs attempt to market to the young, suburban male populace, 90% of ATOT members. Sure, they are some talented examples of each, but that's not what is being broadcast on the pop/hiphop stations 27 times per day.

So what you see is not irrational rap hate, but rather the very predictable reaction of people who recognize when they are purposely being targeted and told to like something by someone trying to make a buck.
