Good luck for 2013 Megatonic. Really happy that your daughter is coming around and best wishes to your sister. My little bro was a month early and had to stay in a baby unit for a few weeks but he is 18 next week and built like a rock. Modern medicine is truly amazing.

jaqie - thanks. i try not to whine too much about my issues, but it does help knowing that others care hence this trainwreck of a thread. i hope this reply finds you having an up day.

Koing - glad to hear about your brother. None of us have any worries for Jackson (nephew), he's doing well for his preemie-ness. It's his mother that's got us all in a state of panic. But she is getting the care she needs, maybe she's got a fighting chance.

An update on the situation:

My nephew, Jackson, is being discharged from the hospital today, way ahead of the projections offered by the neonatal pediatricians. He's gained a pound, eats from a bottle, can sit in his car seat for 90 minutes, and was "snipped". He's doing remarkably well.

My sister is handling her chemo very well and the news of her boy going home has bolstered her morale. Her PET scan showed that no cancer exists aside from the breast, a few lymph nodes, and one unusual spot on her spine. I'll post more about her as I learn things.

That's great news Jeff, modern medicine has come a long way over the years. My 4 year old grandson was 3 months premature, the day he was born he weighed in at 3 pounds 1 ounce. After three months in the neonatal unit he was strong enough to come home. Despite the extremely rough start he got in life all is well, no physical / motor / sensory abnormalities or defects. He is a joyful young fellow abounding with energy (and questions) who seems far advanced for his age, the toys and activities age appropriate for him he finds boring and unexciting.

Whenever his high energy level and inquisitiveness wear us old folks down I think back to this time when he was born and it quickly makes me grateful that he is remarkably healthy and has the ability to do that to his "Mimi and Pop-Pop". Here he is the day that his lil sis was born, during a snowstorm back in January. almost 4

Sorry, I went off on a little personal venture there, my point being that things turned out fantastically well for us, and I pray that they do for your family also. The adversity that your nephew is facing now will be behind your family someday and hopefully there will be no lasting effects.

I hope your sister has a full recovery, I have hatred for that disease because I have lost many family and friends to it, some because of misdiagnosis from incompetent oncology physicians. When my father in law became ill from it there were 3 docs literally fighting over him when he went in the hospital, one wanted to do surgery, one wanted to do radiation and one chemo. He had tumors on his spine and he and the family didn't want surgery due to making it spread more. The surgeon came around on a Sunday morning and used scare tactics to coerce him into the surgery (without our knowledge) and sure enough, the Ca. spread, left him paralyzed and septic, and with an infection that had to be operated on again to clean it up. He had very good insurance and they were literally fighting each other over treatment, it was all just business/revenue to them. After the very unsuccessful surgery (which left him a quadriplegic) the surgeon disappeared (literally moved to another state) not even referring him to another Dr.

again, another personal venture, but my point is don't be afraid to get a second (or third) opinion, there is no absolute/definitive Dx/Tx with this disease.

After editing this and re reading it my intention was not to scare you or anyone, but choose your options wisely, hopefully you will find physicians that will treat your loved ones as they would their own.

Best wishes.
