I am finally gonna get a DVD drive for my PC, wow I am slow I am wondering if you guys think I should get a SCSI drive or IDE drive. I currently have my CDR on one of the SCSI channels so I thought it might benifit me to get a SCSI DVD as well. Any thoughts? I am also in the market for a 17" LCD, read some reviews on them but couldn't really pick a winner out of them. The only one that I am seriously looking at because of price/performance is the NEC-Mitsubishi MultiSync LCD1700V-BK 17" Any suggestion on that too. Thanks for any help

I think an IDE DVD drive would be fine, and probably cheaper too. The popular one seems to be the Pioneer slot-loading model, which you can buy for $44 at newegg. If you want to stick with SCSI though, Pioneer also makes a SCSI model, but it costs $92 at newegg.

Good luck,
Nick

NEC 1700V is an old entry 17" model.
NEC is concentrated in 15" and 18" now, you can see they've many new models for 15" and 18", but not 17".

Today you should buy a thin bezel LCD, not the last generation thick bezel kind.

Take a look Eizo L565, Samsung 172T, these are the 17" LCD you should get today.

172T is available in Asian market already.
170T is old model.

Current new models are:
151P, 152T, 152B for 15",
171P, 172T, 172B for 17",
181T and 191T for 18", 19".

P for Porsche designed.
T for with DVI.
B for without DVI.

When can we expect the 172T to be available in America?

Or will it even be coming over here?

samsungusa.com has 172T already.
170T is not bad, but new model is cheaper and better, why still consider 170T? unless you can find a clearance deal on 170T.

The LCD I can't help you with; I haven't used them enought to add anything to what's already been said. As for the DVD-ROM, I would go with either of the ones listed here. I myself have an original Pioneer 105S (16x slot-load) and it works great (can be made region-free too, if you're interested in anime and/or foriegn films), BUT: a)it can be loud sometimes and b) This thing gets rather warm after playing for any extended period of time. Hasn't ruined any discs or anything - it's not that hot - I just never expected it to get as warm as it does. The newer versions of this drive - 106, I think - may have improved on these problems.

The NEC 1700v is an awesome monitor, even better than the samsung 170t. IMO.
I have looked at a lot of lcd's and not many can touch this. This was the best 17" LCD that NEC made.
The colors are fantastic and the black and gray scales are some of the best I have ever seen. I wouldn't hesitate to pick this up. The Samsung 171p#1, NEC 1700v#2, 170t #3

I am not really interested in getting one that has great performance on games seeing that I only play GTA3 or Warcraft 3 once or twice a month. Mostly surfing so it needs to display whites really well and minimal ghosting.

Dug thanks for trying to help me out but I have a giftcertificate to Amazon.com for $250 and that would bring the price of the LCD down to about $400 or less, and thats about what I have to spend. Thanks though for trying to hook me up.

You can't go wrong with Samsung LCD monitors. My friend has the 17" one (I don't know what model it is), but oh man... that's one hell of a monitor man.

As for DVD-ROM, get a Pioneer Slot-loading DVD. It's the coolest!! It also runs at ATA66 instead of ATA33. It's faster. However, it's louder than the one I used to have. Lite-On 16X DVD-Rom...

Have fun choosing!

bswail123,
as I have stated before,
the best 17" are the current generation thin bezel a-Si TFT 17" such as
Eizo L565
Samsung 171P or 172T or 172B (analog only)

Anything else are older generation thick bezel such as
Samsung 171S, 170T.

Unless your budget is limited so you need to cut corner or there is a hot deal on the old model, you should consider to get the best current generation, the monitor is the most important part in a computer system and you will use it for much longer time than the system.

MVA TFT is a different story, they're always thick bezel, such as Planar's, Viewsonic VX series, and any brand using Fujitsu's MVA TFT.

technically are these LCDs any different? Reason being is that the budget is tight (I have $250 in gift certificates) but they must be used at AMAZON.COM. The only Samsung hey carry that you have listed is the Samsung 171P, but it lists for $919.00. It will still be over $700 after my rebates. I was look at not spending more than $400 - $500 out of pocket, so something that runs about $650 - $750. If the only difference in the older models is the bezel size I am not too worried. Now if the screens are totally different and the newer ones are just light years ahead of the older ones I might think about it. Thanks
