I need to see if anyone can reccomend in internal card, or adapter that will allow me to connect 2 additional devices to a motherboard. I have a sata hard drive and a sata DVD burner. the board is of the p4 era and is just some extra parts friend had laying around and is wanting to get up and running as a little back up box. It currently has 2 IDE devices a hard drive ,and dvd burner installed and the pc is up and running perfectly.
He purchased a masscool add on card. But I can only seem to get it to work as a raid controller. this is the card....

with the hd and burner plugged into it , the pc will not boot. with the dvd drive unplugged the pc will boot, but there is no access to the drive at all. The bios shows it, but I can not find any way to format it allowing access to it in windows.
If anyone has experience with this hardware and can help out with it's setup PLEASE let me know. OR can anyone reccomend a add on card or an adapter of some kind that will allow me to connect 2 SATA devices. Thanks again ATOT!

That looks like the Syba 3114-based card that I usually recommend. I would flash to the Silicon Image IDE bios though if you plan on using a DVD drive on it.

As VirtualLarry notes, you may need a firmware update for the card.

One of the Newegg.com reviews has instructions that seem to make sense:

"Cons: You need to go to the Silicon Image web site and download software for the Silicon Image SIL 3114 chipset. Get these four things: The DOS based UPDFLASH.EXE flash updater software (the Windows version DOES NOT WORK), BIOS version 5.4.0.3 (r5403.bin), version 1.5.1.10 of the drivers for your OS (XP, Vista, etc.), and the software package, version 1.5.1.10.

Then you need to make a DOS bootable CD or floppy disk, and copy the UPDFLASH.EXE and r5403.bin files to it. Then shutdown your computer and connect a small drive (1TB will not work) to the card. Without a drive connected, the flash update won't work.

Boot from your CD or floppy, and type "UPDFLASH.EXE r5403.bin" without the quotes. When it ask if you want to continue, hit Y, and then wait until it returns with a confirmation that the BIOS was upgraded. Turn off your computer and remove remove the CD or floppy.

Other Thoughts: Finally, boot into windows, and when the New Hardware Found Wizard runs, point it to the drivers you downloaded, and the card should be active. After that completes, install the RAID software by double clicking the 3114-W-I32-R_15150.msi (for XP, or the appropriate version for Vista). This will install the RAID software.

Now you can shutdown and install your 1TB drives. When you reboot, everything should work, and you can configure a RAID array with the software."

=============================

If you run out of alternatives, I've used two of the following PCI card with 1 TB Hitachi disks on older motherboards with zero issues. It has two internal IDE connectors and two internal SATA connectors. There are also two external SATA connectors, but I think they are tied to the internal connectors:

Yes, it's a VIA chipset and, yes, I HATE VIA. But this card works fine and comes with enough accessory cables to almost justify the $20 price even without the card.

Don't assume that an add-in controller like this will support an IDE or SATA DVD/CD drive. It might or it might not.
