Need to beer-proof my basement ... how?

So I have ~200sq ft in a slightly weird arrangement for a basement that's completely finished with a wet bar and carpet. My buddy wants to set up his ping pong table down there for .. ping pong and beer pong. Since I have a wet bar down there it'll officially be the party hangout spot. Problem is I don't want my carpet permastained by beer. I don't really have the time/money to rip it up and tile it either. Is there some sort of giant mat-type thing I can use? Like a half inch thick sheet of something?

Needs to be non-slip (like rubber), but cleanable and easy to cut to shape. I have no idea what to get. Suggestions?

Go to office depot or Staples and find those big mats they use under chairs. They have much larger sizes that can cover a whole office.

Heavy duty utility shears can cut them to fit.

Solution:
1) Heavy duty plastic sheets. You can get these in the camping section or paint section at Walmart for about $5.
2a) Cheap floor rugs. You can also get these at Walmart. You will need two for your carpet. They are about $15 - $20 each.
2b) Carpet remnants. You can get these really cheap or free from a place that sells carpets.

Thanks .. I'd like something more "permanent", as in I can clean it. If I got carpet remnants/rugs I'd have to toss them after a little while cause they'd start to stink I would assume.

Honestly, you're going to spend as much as if you just bought some self-stick vinyl tile, pulled the carpet, prepped the floor, and put them down. This is assuming you have a basement with a concrete floor.

a huge, inflatable pool to cover much of the area around the table? bonus: it will catch beer, so you dont waste any, and you can fill it with jello and have ladies wrestle in it.

also you can take it outside in the summer and just chill in the pool. be sure to get one with the slide and/or a palm tree.

I thought it said bear proof..lol

A plastic sheet of some sort would be easiest, otherwise tile or laminate would be the way to go. If you are lazy, maybe a big sheet of vinyl and just put it on top of the carpet?

I know they sell carpets in square pieces that you can put together to cover an entire floor (similar to the hardwood floor pieces you can fit together). If something gets screwed up, you just replace one of the squares.

I'd just buy a tarp and take it outside and hose it off now and then. Throw it out when it gets too stinky to be rinsed... it should only be $20 max to get one to cover the whole basement.

LOL, seriously? These are horrible ideas. Do you have any idea how uncomfortable and awkward a tarp on top of carpet would be? Further, how are you going to stretch it out and make it taught?

Depends on the carpet pile... if it's low pile carpet it would be no big deal. Make it taught with furniture on the edges.

and how the heck do you play ping pong on a tarp?

This is a worse idea than the jump to conclusions mat

But it would have different conclusions written on it that you could jump to.

If your buddy wants to install his table for beer pong it should be his responsibility to come up with a solution to keep your place from getting trashed.

Forget the carpet and go with stained concrete, it's even fashionable now. If you have a drain in the floor, all you need is a hose.

They make stuff called Carpet Mask, comes in a roll of a few hundred feet. Its a clear plastic that has adhesive on one side to stick to the carpet and you can lay this stuff out to cover the entire floor. They use it in new houses and stuff to protect the carpet from foot traffic. When you are done you just pull it up, doesnt do any damage to the carpet.

I used this in my apartment on campus for 2 years under a beer pong table and the carpet was spotless after all that abuse.

Put a sign on the door that says No Alcoholic Beverages Beyond this Point.
Problem solved.
