O.k. here is what I have currently have....

Dual Athlon 2000's
512meg of memory
nvidia Ti4600
7200 RPM Hard drive with 8mb cash

Which of these is going to cause an online game to be jumpy?? I currently have DSL and regularly have a ping between 100 and 200 so I don't think it is my connection. I just don't know what piece(s) of hardware is/are going to make the most difference in and online game. If I were going to replace any one or two parts what would give me the best boost?

BTW If it makes a difference the game is Star Wars Galaxies

dude, that ping sux!!! Try playing with a ping of about 50 or so. I think you have to find a server that is closer to your node. I used to play Q3a but never with a ping over 100. You will get pwnd so fast....

Your hardware is solid, find a better server.

Ping times are affected mainly by the connection. Its likely the server you are trying to play on is not in your best interest to play there. If this is a close server though, you can optimzie your local connection. You could try a different NIC. If you are using router try another one or try messing with its settings to optimize whatever port you need optimized.

no lie, I typically don't play on battlefield servers unless the ping is below 50, typically I can find them in the 20-30 range.

bingo, yer hardware is well enough for any good game out there, the bottle neck may even be your DSL, DSL sucks compared to cable as far as online gaming because of the 1.5Mbps throughput down...

my advice, find a closer server, or upgrade your connection type

The one good thing about DSL is that if you're super close to the switch or node you can get a ping that rulez all! I had two friends on our WFA team and they were like a block from the node and never had pings over 50. So, if you can get a good location you can have a good connect. Otherwise, cables pwns j00.

I agree. I'm mad when my ping goes above 60ms in BF1942 with cable.

that depends on what cable offers in your area, mine is;
cableone
512kb down 128 up 39.99
768kb down 128 up 59.99
768kb down 256 up 99.99
nothing is even offered over 768kb down here.
sbc
1.5mb down 128 up 26.95
1.5mb down 256up 39.95
3mb down 256 up 79.95

obviously I use dsl, plus I don't have to worry about hackers(used to be a big problem when I was in waco on cable) as much since dsl is baseband.
edit: and to think the cableone people advertise that cable is faster than dsl....true in many cities, but not here.

DROOOOOOOOL =D

I'm getting 3mb down, 512up, and it's only costing me $45 CDN (that includes the modem rental, $40 if i had provided my own)... that's about $35USD. And i'm paying a lot compared to some of the people here. Most new users get 6 months at $25CDN.

I get 1 meg up and 1.5 down DSL for $40 here. FYI though, a ping of 100 is AWESOME for most MMRPG's. I get sub 50 pings in Q3 and CoD with no problems. But on Horizons, Asheron's Call and Asheron's Call 2 I ping MUCH higher. I would take a look at your card drivers, or turn the video settings down a bit (I am not sure how much pressure that thing puts on your vid card). For the most part, lag like that is server side, and not in a connection way. If the server has a ton of people on it then it could just be getting bogged down. I would try the least populated server as a test to see if you lag like you do on the other server.

edit

Also see if, while ingame, you are hitting your HD. If you are then it could be that your page file is getting hit to often. With 512 you can set it pretty low if you dont do to much stuff that requires a TON of ram.

Ah, i didn't realize you were talking about SWG. Alright, what exactly do you mean by 'jumpy'? If you mean there is 'video lag', then it's because of your settings. If you have shadows enabled, disable it... there's a HUGE performance hit. And more memory would definitely help. Just play with the video settings until you get it smoothed. That's assuming that's what the problem is. 'Jumpy' doesn't really mean much to me.

And 100-200 ping for a MMORPG is just fine.
