Need to buy a HDD for my Network Video Recorder - WD Purple or other?

Hello friends,

I hope everyone is doing well. I need to buy a HDD for my Network Video Recorder (NVR) which will be connected to my IP surveillance cameras at home.

This will be for use at my residence.

I am looking for a 4TB or a 6TB HDD, unless there is a good deal on a larger capacity.

I have been told that the WD Purple is a good option, however, I am open to other suggestions.

I am located in Houston, TX and am ok buying it in person or online.

I really appreciate your advice.

Is this only a single drive, or do you have RAID going on?
Purple is rated for 24/7 & "32 streams", and it has a tweaked firmware for larger files.
You might even compare the price of Seagate's Surveillance HDs as well.
I have seen people use NAS drives for this type of work, and haven't heard of any issues with using those, it just depends on use case.

In any case, whichever HD you chose, it is wise to have a backup plan when these will fail, and they will fail at some point.

I would completely agree with Elixer's suggestions and explanation. Though any drive would practically work, NVR systems work in a bit different way compared to regular desktop systems thus DVR/NVR HDDs are recommended for the most problem-free usage. WD Purple indeed is one option. I could also suggest checking the WD Purple NV which is specifically designed and manufactured for the more demanding NVR systems.
