Looking to get a good used Mitre saw. Using it to cut Hardwood floor, but want to use it other projects (deck builing etc....). What are some good brands, seems Ryobi is very common, but is on the cheap end....

Spend the money, buy Makita. Don't forget to budget for a good blade too.

2nd vote for a sliding compound style one. sooo much better. the brand you can pick and choose... bosch, makita, dewalt, milwaukee.. even ryobi would work for what you need.

Not sure I can recommend Milwaukee anymore since they were bough out and all their production moved offshore. Yes, global economy but even their signature tools are now made in China.

Definitely get a slider style.

I have a standard Ryobi from about 5 years ago. It works great, but I am limited to 4x4 sized boards.
When I want to cut a 2x6, I have to make a cut, flip the board over and try to line up the cuts.
I have used it to install 1200sqft of oak hardwood flooring, built 2 large decks, cut countless 2x4s for framing, and numerous other small woodworking projects.

The Ryobi motor is great and keeps on ticking. The rest of the components are a little weak. The pivot motion is very tight and doesn't lock perfectly into place.
I have numerous Ryobi tools and they are all great for the money. I have never had one die, even after a lot of abuse. (impact driver, drill, sanders, miter saw, jigsaw, etc.)

One responce from Milwaukee...

"Although we are one of the only power tool manufacturers to manufacture power tools in the USA, this particular combo kit is manufactured in Milwaukee’s China facility. We have manufacturing facilities throughout the world; the United States, Asia and Europe. Our global design center is located in Brookfield, Wisconsin, USA. All of our manufacturing facilities throughout the world adhere to the same strict standards of quality and manufacture products designed to uphold the Nothing but Heavy Duty badge."

The tools are still great and yes it's getting very hard to find made in the USA power tools anymore... in fact most of the sights you could find out about them don't even exist anymore:'(

They still do have the 5yr warranty on parts and labor also.

Sorry, I still wouldn't buy Ryobi. After using good tools there's a huge difference going back to a cheap one. Buy a quality tool and it'll last 20 years easily.

Bosch or Dewalt.

I have a 10 inch compound dewalt. My dad has the 12" compound double bevel sliding miter saw from dewalt. I'm super jelly of it. I can't afford to pay $600 for a miter saw though.

I got the 12inch double bevel sliding miter from dewalt. You can get it for less than $600 from amazon, which is usually cheaper than in the store without some special going on.

Sure there are alot of cheaper alternatives, but you are more than likely going to have this saw until the day you die. You might as well get a saw thats going to last the test of time and thats going to be able to do anything that you may want in the future.

Used, buy used. So many people buy these things when they buy a newly constructed house and have to trim the entire interior then it sits for years cutting an occasional 2X4.

where are you located?

Mine is like new, basically bought it to put up trim and crown molding in my remodeled basement, will offload it for about half of what I paid.

I have the Hitachi C8FB sliding compound mitre saw. It is about 9 years old now and they may not have the exact same model now.

I used to like makita, but the last few rigid tools I've bought have been VERY quality for the price.

Just pay heed to their warranty when it comes to battery tools.

I have a Dewalt compound miter. Love it except it's monstrously heavy and no laser line which isn't a big deal since lining up a cut on one of these things is pretty simple.

Bosch hands down.

I have been impressed with some of the Rigid stuff, but I don't trust them enough for this level of purchase.

Get a CMT blade no matter which saw you buy. This will have more impact than anything else. There is a huge difference!

You can buy laser lock washers if the saw doesn't come with them.

Sliders are less accurate and take up more floor space.

Festool is certainly a maker of high quality tools, and most beyond the range of the average Joe, but in this case I can say that I do NOT like their chop box.

If you ever want to cut greater than 10 inch shelf boards the slide will come in handy. Its a hell of alot easier than making 2 cuts. As for accuracy, if there is any actual difference, I doubt one would even notice.

I have a Dewalt compound mitre saw that I've had for about 5-6 years. Great saw, no complaints whatsoever. I've done quite a bit of base molding in our house with it.
