Hello all !!
I'm new to this kind of things. I found this forum trying to find a solution to my problem. This is a fantastic forum and the ideas and solutions of the people are very good.

Unfortunately though, this couldn't help me further. My problem is as follows. :

I need to replace my motherboard without reinstalling windows, but not for the sake of upgrade, but for the simple reason that my motherboard is dead.

I cannot find the exact same motherboard to replace the old one with, just other similar ones.

My question is if it is possible to do any of these things (sysprep and/or "pci trick") on my hard drive without being able to start the computer that it originally belongs in?? Like if I hook it up on another computer or something like that.

If anybody knows any other solution i would be thankfull. Like I said, i just want to install a new motherboard on my system (nothing else new if possible), because it is dead, and avoiding to reinstall windows and all other programms, and avoiding format.

Thank you all for your time and help in advance.

My system is:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
ASUS M/B A7V8X with VIA KT400 Chipset - DDR400
O/S Windows XP Home Edition SP ... (not sure anymore, but I think it is 2, but maybe 1) -

If anybody needs any more information please notify me through this thread.
Ty again

Note: I hope i posted this in the right section :s

I would swap the motherboard and the boot to safe mode and see what you can do. If you are keeping the same processor (i.e. AMD if you have AMD, or Intel, if you have Intel) things are a little easier (you don't have to worry about Windows Hotfixes that are specific for your processor). Once in "safe mode" try and cleanup as much as you can by uninstalling drivers and installing the new ones that came with your motherboard. It "might" work. Not much else you can do....

Find a similar ASUS mobo with a VIA KT400 Chipset and install

Go to device manager
Unistall as many device drivers as you can

Reboot and Reinstall new drivers

You will be good to go . . . .

edit again: I forgot to add that another vendor but same chipset may work - I've changed out an Asus with an AsRock - but that's almost the same thing.

I think the conflict between the two boards was the ethernet driver

This is what sold me on XP: 3-4 months after upgrading to XP I get a new mobo/proc/mem. I try to boot windows normally but is sits at the logo screen with the little bar running across the bottom. I reboot and again same thing, except this time I let it go and go watch TV. When I come back later it's sitting at my desktop and running fine. Ran that way for 2 yrs without a re-install. XP will figure itself out, just give it time. Also, the boards were same chipset manufacturer but different generations( via I think, its been a while).
