Need to clear something up about CCCP

I'm just making up my decision about whether to keep FFdshow alone, or install CCCP.

I like to keep everything really simple and FFdshow does the trick because it decodes almost everything. But CCCP has huge support behind it too, so I need help on the following to make up my mind. (I'm really fussy about what to keep!)

My questions:

1. Apart from the advantage of being able to play Matroska files, what other advantages or additions does CCCP offer alongside FFdshow?

2. CCCP disables many FFdshow audio and video codecs by default. If I enable all of the FFdshow codecs afterwards, will any of them conflict with any other's included in the rest of CCCP?

http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index....=FAQ#What_exactly_can_the_CCCP_play.3F

2: as long as the only thing you have installed is the CCCP, enabling codecs in the ffdshow vfw setting is fine, and won't cause any conflicts. on the very off-chance that it does, disabling them is just as simple as enabling them.

http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page the wiki holds much more knowledge

the CCCP is really getting to be the absolute best solution for most video playback. all of the devs are very well versed in video encoding/decoding, and the pack is just so beautifully streamlined and optimized. Plus, the support they offer for it through the forums and the IRC chat is outstanding, should a problem ever arise.

I think I'm going for CCCP, but the wiki's still confuse me. Why would I go for CCCP when FFDshow has almost everything? If I have only FFDshow with everything enabled, what will CCCP allow me to play in Windows Media Player that FFdshow won't? And what are the advantages of Haali that comes with CCCP?

As you can see I'm trying to only keep one program (FFDshow), but if I know of anything else that CCCP has to offer, than I might go for it. I just don't know all the other things that come with CCCP. The Wiki doesn't split between everything that is possible to enable in FFDshow with the rest of CCCP.

Think of CCCP as a one stop shop.

CCCP has all the codecs you'll ever need. Last time I checked ffdshow did not support the mkv format or the ogm format.
Just uninstall any codecs you might have (including ffdshow) and install CCCP. It comes with everything even 2 media players.

After CCCP the only things I think you might need is Quicktime Alternative and Real Alt.

Sounds good, I would like the extra support of CCCP.

How can I be sure that if I enable everything in FFDShow (all the video and audio codecs), that CCCP doesn't already have it in the rest of the package? I don't like two of the same like most other codec packs have, yet still want to enable one of everything.

You really shouldn't enable all the codecs in ffdshow.
The only other one besides the default is the raw video (or the one on the very bottom) so that it works with DVD's.
You should leave the others alone.

you need to remove the separate ffdshow version if you install the CCCP, so it doesn't conflict. the CCCP uses its own ffdshow build for just about everything, so fiddling with the codecs in VFW settings won't hurt. again, if anything breaks, its just a simple matter of disabling it. the CCCP also has its own settings manager, so if anything goes wrong, you can always revert back to the defaults.

By the way, Quicktime Alternative is warez. it uses a Quicktime Pro serial number.

if all you want is to stream stuff in your browser and play .mov files in any media player (even Media Player Classic), just get the standalone Quicktime Player from Apple. the player itself isnt as bloated or slow as it used to be in version 6, either.

as for Real...no one uses that format anymore. you shouldn't really need it.

Excellent, thanks for the info (everyone!). I will be going with CCCP.
