Need to shrink win2k registry

I found out that my registry is now 15mb. When I first installed, it was closer to 6. I'd like to try to shrink it somehow to see if it helps the boot/shutdown time. It used to take a min to boot, but not it takes 3. Shutting down used to take 5 sec, but now it's like 2.
If it's anything like win9x, there's gotta be some junk in there that's safe to kill. I went through some sections and deleted stuff on programs I uninstalled.
If anybody knows of a method or program, please post. thanx!

You can change the size of the registry but I don't think that's your problem. My registry is around 22MB and I don't see the boot and shutdown times you are describing. A 15MB registry isn't that big.

Are you acessing a netowrk or do you have a NIC card on this computer? That is usually the most common cause for longer boot and shutdown times. Depending on the protocols and addressing/configuration you have set up it can add a substantial amount of time.

Defrag your registry; use Ontrack Sytem Suite which supports Win2000 & Win98. (Norton's version should be ready in another 6 weeks or so). Ontrack's product has been ready since last November and has had more time for debugging updates.

This worked for WIN9X, unsure if it works for WIN2K on NTFS partition. Boot to a safe mode command prompt. Export the registry to a file. Import the registry back from the file. This conversion removes any wasted space from the registry. Hope this helps.

You can also limit the size of your registry in NT/2000 by right clicking My computer, properties, advanced, performance options, change, then at the bottom, Max registry size in MB.

isn't the max registry size setting only to set how much ram it's allowed to use and not the physical file? I read that on www.ntfaq.com. I wanna try to shrink it. I'll try Ontrack.

I can't find a trial/demo of OnTrack. Anybody have a hookup or know where I can get it?
I tried doing the export registry thing. It came out to be a 13mb file. However, it also screwed up my system. All the drivers had to be reloaded and many of my personal settings were messed up. Luckily I backed up the registry before I tried it (I rarely back them up before tweaking).
Any other ideas?

Just download system mechanics from jamer's pad and clean your reg it's the safest program that i use and it's good....trust me.
