Get the X800XL.

It will play your games at higher settings, and will last you longer since it performs about the same as a 6800GT.

Well,

I have the X800XL... I can play MVP Baseball and NBA Live on max settings. I doubt it on the 6600GT- its pretty weak.

The 6600GT is far from weak. Until you get to high resolution (over 1280x1024) or add in AA/AF it performs fairly close to an X800XL.

Anyways, why would those two cards be the ones you were looking at? It's obvious that the X800XL is a better card but it costs around double the 6600GT.

Perhaps you meant the 6800GT? Then it is a much closer call.

No. I wanted to know if I could get by with a 6600GT and still be able to play on all high settings.

Well the 6600GT does fine until you start to get up to higher resolutions. If you are fine at 1024x768 or 1280x960 then I would say yes.

I run FarCry on my 6600GT + XP3200+ and I get an average of about 75-100 FPS at 1280x960 with 2xQAA and 2xAF. It never drops under 50FPS.

It's a big price difference to be able to play games at 1600x1200 +AA/AF I think.

As I indicated above, if I were buying now on a fairly tight budget, I'd get the X800XL. However, I have a 6600GT and I am very happy with it. I run all my games @ 1280x960 with at least 4xAA and 4xAF and I never have low frame rate stuttering. Granted, I OC it, but it works well none the less. More details are in my sig.

Well, you don't have to. But yes, you're right. I believe that's the monitor's max rez so you'd need to upgrade your monitor before you bump higher.
