Does anyone know how much it might cost to have wisdom teeth removed, *without insurance*? The job I'm at right now doesn't provide insurance (*and* they're cutting hours... it's not much of a job any more), and I was advised to have at least 2, or preferably both, of my wisdom teeth removed over a year ago. However, none of them had really bothered me, so I didn't give it a second thought (because I haven't had insurance the entire time).

Tonight I get home and grab a snack to eat... and discover that my gum is very swollen on the lower right side, only where my wisdom tooth would be, and hurts a little when I push on it with my tongue - kinda like a bruise. I'm kinda hoping that the swelling magically goes away, or that something minor is causing it... I don't have the time or money to deal with this right now.

Depends on the surgeon. You should look around for somebody who knows what they're doing rather than somebody who will just take your money and put a hammer and chisel in your mouth. Yes, there'a huge difference between people who know what they're doing and those who don't.

Yeah, I know. I have a friend that is a Hygienist (sp?), and works for a Dentist... I'll probably ask him for advice. I trust him.

Wait a few days to see if the swelling/pain goes away.

Although many may believe otherwise, it is NOT a must to remove your wisdom teeth.

One of the few tangible benefits I got for serving in the Army. Even though the officer that did the job gouged a blood vessel that was still bleeding when they sent me back to my unit.

Shouldn't it have been free. Your Canadian. You have free healthcare.

Right. The swelling and pain disappeared overnight - doesn't hurt now. I still think it'll have to be done eventually, though.

:roll:

Only if it's declared an emergency procedure, ie "You're going to die if we don't get your wisdom teeth out."

Healthcare != Dental

You used to be able to go to any hospital and have them removed (and it'd be covered under Canadian healthcare), but from what I hear that's changed now.

But that reminds me, that I definately need to get mine removed at some point in time.

If they don't bother you, don't pull them out. Plain and simple. It's an easy way for offices to make money. That's why most dentists want you to get them pulled.

had mine removed this time last week. All four came out under a GA. £350, but that was going private through a specialist at hospital. It depends on the job (impacted, etc) and whether your regular dentist can do it, or you need to go to a dental surgeon.

Got to say, my surgeon was awesome, I was eating solid food two hours after waking from the GA. His stitching was a work of art. The lower teeth were seriously impacted too.

Yeah it is if you don't want all of your other teeth to shift from crowding.

Depends on a lot of factors. I'd say minimum $500 for 4 teeth (not sure about 2) and often around $1000. Mine were over $1000 because none were erupted and the positioning was difficult, so a general anesthetic was necessary.

No, it isn't. Not everyone's teeth shift due to crowding. Some people have room in their mouths.
