Mine cost me about $300, and that was WITH insurance. The problem was 3 of mine needed to be cut out because the previous dentist (el cheapo) tried to just chisel them out, but they were far too beyond decay for that. He should have referred me to an oral surgeon, but instead made little knobs of my wisdom teeth, which were then impossible to pull out using conventional methods.

I have a complaint with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners with the first guy. I also have to say that it was much more horrible having 1/4 - 1/2 of a decaying tooth than the surgery / recovery at the 2nd location.

However, the oral surgeon did hit one of my nerves during the surgery, so now the left side of my chin doesn't feel anything like the rest of my face, and I recall that nerve damage never really heals 100%, so I was kinda screwed both times.

yeah... i'm told that it's horrible.

i think i'll probably wait a while longer... until it bothers me non-stop. its not painful right now, so i'll table the thought that i need to have it done immediately.

Most of the time it is necessary to pull them because they are impacted on the molars, which can lead to crowding. However, the choice is either have them pulled now or have them pulled later when you have to and get braces to correct the problem of shifting. Personally, I would pay the ~$500 and save the cost of having to go to the ortho. It's easy enough to X-rays to see how the teeth are positioned.

Although many may believe otherwise, it is NOT a must to remove your wisdom teeth.

Yeah it is if you don't want all of your other teeth to shift from crowding.

No, it isn't. Not everyone's teeth shift due to crowding. Some people have room in their mouths.

Well, it's a chance most people aren't willing to take, especially if they paid about $4k for braces...

Shouldn't it have been free. Your Canadian. You have free healthcare.

Only if it's declared an emergency procedure, ie "You're going to die if we don't get your wisdom teeth out."

Do they have dental insurance in Canada. I know someone with dental insurance who only had to pay $100 total to remove 4 wisdom teeth.

That is what I used to think. I had a wisdom tooth that wasn't bothering me severely damage the bone and molar next to it. Wisdom tooth is now out, bone now requires some kind of weird graft.

It's cheaper if you opt to stay awake (use novacaine) instead of being knocked out. Substantially cheaper. I was in the same situation... no insurance and needed them out. So I went the route of staying awake and saved myself some money.

Yes, it's very easy to get full coverage. But if you don't have insurance, it's not magically $0.

Fixed for less optomisitc/more realistic.

Fixed for stop being such a pussy.

I had eight teeth out at once. Yes, I went under. No, it wasn't really painful the next few days. Take your drugs, listen to your ortho, & you = fine.

Ask around and go to the best dentist/surgeon. Ive heard of people that were wishing for death after having them pulled but the surgeon that a friend of mine told me about was brilliant. I was eating solid foods that night. I went to a water park that weekend. My friend had some sort of surgury where they cut out a piece of his jaw to fix his profile a bit and he was eating solid foods a few days later. I recommend this guy to everyone...the ones who listen to me are fine, all the others cry about how bad their experience was. This guy is in a south suburb of Chicago so if you're close toss me a PM.

Oooh pain comparison fight! Mine were all impacted, sideways and the top two were digging into my sinus tract at both angles. You probably were able to have yours stitched up but mine were just gaping holes I had to spray salt water into every time I ate or before I went to bed. Try eating anything with gaping bloody holes in your gums.

Right. The swelling and pain disappeared overnight - doesn't hurt now. I still think it'll have to be done eventually, though.

How much room do you have across your gums? I had swelling and pain when my wisdom teeth came in, but they're all in now and fine.

But... if you were advised to have them out, it might be good. Maybe ask your dental hygenist friend what they think?

I can't remember what all issues the dentist said I might have with my wisdom teeth... but I remember that they're at some weird angle or something, and that it probably wouldn't be easy to have them removed. Beyond that, I can't remember. <shrug>

I'll probably ask Nate what he thinks whenever I talk to him next. I might even go to his dentist... I've heard that he occasionally gives charity discounts to those without insurance.

If your wisdom teeth are at a 'weird angle' you'll be posting your own pain comparison soon unfortunately :\

See if there's a dental school near your area too. It may sound dumb, but it'll save you money... and there is ALWAYS an actual dentist to supervise it.

Yeah, so I've been told. I wish I could remember exactly what he said... though I didn't honestly care at the time, since they weren't bothering me, and he said it wasn't something that had to be done immediately.

Oh well. I wonder if offing myself would be less painful

Doesn't really happen. Only on rare ocations. Think of it this way.. you have 1 tooth pushing on 15 other teeth. Basic physics tells you those other 15 teeth are pushing back. I don't think that 1 wisdom tooth is going to do anything. (rarely)

It's just another way for them to make some money.

Gargle with plenty of salt water for now to reduce the pain and swelling.

I just got my estimated costs from my dentist. $414 AFTER insurance. They are charging $1130 for 4 wisdom tooth extractions, 1 impacted and 3 normal.

My bill came to $1300 Canadian... so about $1000 USD.

Insurance rocks... I only paid $50...
