need your thoughts on this ?

Hi All,

I was thinking to automate one part my job which requires me to make MS word document everytime i recieve a new request . It's a sort of design document .

The point is everytime i recieve a new request i grab a copy of OLD design document,make some changes here and there for this new request and i am done.

After giving it a thought i was hoping to do something which can do this task to me . I did some reading on VBA and it seems this things can be done using VBA or any other means which i may not be aware of .

What i am thinking is a program which gets input from the user (via web would be great ) and then fits those input fields in the existing WORD document format . ( i am not sure how to accomplish this as i don't any exposure to MS programming )

Can anyone suggest me a way by which i can done this ?I am ready to learn that language and implement it myself .

Tell me if i am not clear in this post .

Microsoft Word exposes all of its functionality through an application programming interface (API) that you can use. You can essentially tell it programmatically to open a document and replace part of it with the new request information. You want to look for information about Word and Automation. Behind the scenes, Windows will actually be running an instance of Word, so this is not a technique you want to use if many people are trying to generate Word documents with your web site at the same time (because the multiple instances of Word will cause performance problems).

Another option is to generate XML. Word documents (at least in Word 2003, and to some extent earlier versions) can be turned into XML format and back again. So if you use Word and save your document as XML, you can then programmatically manipulate that XML to replace the parts you want, and then ask Word to open it back up. You may find it easier to manipulate XML than to use the Automation API for Word. It depends on your background.

hay, you could try to learn a really simple programming language called Auto It. You can search google for autoit and its the first link. Plus its free . Its also really easy to use but very powerful. If you tell me the veriables that you change, and the format u wont i can make it for you. or if u dont trust .exes from other ppl i can send u the code and you can complile it yourself . I can also help you do it if you would like. . just shout if your interested

thanks guys .. i will let u know ... i tried autoit but was not very sure if i could use it to do my job ..darknecromancer could you plse send me the autoit script where you are generating the MS word document by copying contents from a saved doucment ... where you are copying it from the one document and pasting it in the document your are creating by autoit.. hope i am clear ... really appreciate your help..
