Needs 19" FD Trinitron Monitor...

Hello..I am shopping for a FD 19" monitor with FD to replace my dying 17" Optiquest.
Ive heard KDS, NEC, Samsung, Dell, and Cornerstone ALL make 19" Trinitron tube monitors.
Are these CRT'S at the same quality and performance level as a factory made SONY 19" FD CRT vis a vis refresh rate, etc?

Where might I find a 19" FD monitor for about $280 or so? (Would pay more for the SONY FD 19" if the performance were there).

Using the monitor for my 3-D video games and Autocad.

NOTE: DOES shipping said monitor via UPS subject the monitor to any damage that might shorten its life vs just going to BEST BUYS and buying one there? (Would rather shop the web to reduce price and save sales tax if possible).

Thank you kindly.

Please help-looking to make decision soon.

About 3 days ago you could have gotten a white dell P991 which is a rebagged Sony G400 for $280 with the 20% off, but it ended, but dell always does deals like that so just wait a few weeks untill they do another promoion like that.

"Would pay more for the SONY FD 19" if the performance were there"

I bought a Sony HMD A400L trinitron at Circuit City a few weeks ago. At first I balked at the 1 year warranty, and lack of high refresh rates.
This is the nicest monitor I've looked at for gaming, period.

I run it at 11X8X32 @ 85Hz, 12X10 does 75Hz, which I didn't notice flicker at, but would rather synch to 85 for gaming. (or 100 at 10X7)

Anyway, there's an $80 rebate on these critters, which gets them close to $400.

Good luck with this decision- I agonized over it. Read all the reviews of all monitors under $500, etc.. eck.

How do you/I really know that the Dell is a "rebagged" Sony G400? Ive heard this elsewhere but dont really believe SONY would undermine sales of its own factory product to sell the same monitor to another competitor-How do we really know that the specs for the Dell monitor are the same as the SONY G400 or if that SONY monitor has been "detuned" for sale to Dell?
I would like to know if there is any empirical data for this-
Thank you.

You should get the KDS Avitron 19" at Tigerdirect. It's the FD trini, factory recertified. My friend just recieved his and it's PERFECT!! It's only $200, and Ground shipping was $30. He ordered it on Tues evening, and it was on his doorstep Thursday afternoon. So he paid $230 out the door, for a perfect new monitor. And had it basicaly within 2 days.

I own the Sony G500 21" and it is quite comparable. In fact I went over to do the fine adjustments for him, and it was actually better setup out of the box than my Sony. I love both, but the KDS is WAY better bang for the buck. I was in awe at the quality vs. the price.

For me(especially after seeing it and using it first-hand) it's a no-brainer.

Jump on the Dell forum for monitors. The Dell rep there stated that the P991 and P992 are both made by Sony.

I just bought a P992 for $345. (20% off and free shipping)

The KDS is "factory recertified"-does that mean is was a "used return"?
Or what? What is the TIGER DIRECT Warranty on that monitor?
Also does that montor support the same refresh rates as the G400 SONY with the same resolution?
Thank you.

Try the Dell P992, great monitor, great price.

The only problem is that Dell is too freaking cheap to include a ferrite kit on the monitor cable so I had to add it myself on mine.

It is factory recertified from the KDS factory. It is sealed and boxed from them. This means it is also warranteed from KDS as well. Tiger doesn't have anything to do with the warranty. The warranty from KDS is 90 days on the recertified monitors. These are also the monitors that they send out to those who need warranty replacements.

So this means they are new from the KDS factory, and have been checked and double checked for quality.

All I know is that this monitor was nicer and better setup than %95 of monitors I've seen or used from off the shelf. And those were at full price. For the price and quickness of service, it's far and away the best deal I've ever seen.

Here are some pages.

The KDS page for this monitor.

The epinions page for this monitor.

Check out the specs, and read the reviews at epinions. The reviews are great, and also check out the prices those guys paid. If they like it so much at $400-$500. I'm sure you'll love it at $199. And with only $30 shipping, the total price is a steal. Judge for yourself, but after seeing this monitor first-hand it would be the ONLY monitor I would get now. I paid WAY more for my Sony G500, and to tell you the truth there's not that much of a difference to remotely justify the price, if I was to buy a monitor now. The KDS would do everything I would need it to, and look great doing it. And my friend is ecstatic.

Thanks for continuing..my knowledgeable buddy will ONLY buy monitors now from BEST BUY or CIRCUIT CITY or any store. he will NOT buy via mail order or at a local computer show.

He says that he has has too many "bad" monitors or "out of adjustment" monitors from these sources.
He knows that the store monitors are also shipped but can return those driving a few miles instead of the hassle of packing them up and shipping ground again or back to the computer show vendor 50+ miles away.

Yet, I bought my current Optiquest 4000TC here in 1992 at a computer show and am just now seeing a small problem with it.

What of his claims? The last thing Id want is to get that new KDS Avitron from TigerDirect and then have the display blur, or electron gun weaken, or flicker or go black at day 91 of its life.
I am ready to order online that KDS Avitron 195TF but dont want to have to buy another monitor in 3 mos or 6 months or 1 year. 90 days in gaeland here goes buy in a flash and their optional $20 warranty is for 1 year only.

Thank you-technical helps.

So then are these monitors USED and then "recertified" and reconditioned then turned around for SALE? Wre they "problem children" now debugged and repaired and then bench tested to specs and then resold because KDS just doesnt want to take a loss on them?

I really would like to know.

Well the online merchant vs. brick and mortar debate is ongoing and applies to every product not just monitors. But the savings are huge and at this level of savings I think it's worth it. And if my experience is any help, the one we got was better adjusted and setup than the vast majority I've seen anywhere. And that goes for my very expensive Sony G500.

The recertified monitors are most likely not "used" per-say but as you said were problem children. They use the parts they can or fix the problem part, and then are remanufactured and tested to spec. At this time it's the same as if it first left the factory. It is done at the same factory and is actually tested more than the retail line. Let's put it this way. If you have a problem with a retail monitor and send it back, they don't give you new retail boxed stock, they send you one of these. So I'm sure they want to send you a monitor that is BETTER than the one you sent back. They want to make sure that the one you get will last, and is trouble free.

There is no such thing as a perfect monitor, and if you hang around here enough you'll see all of the reports of full price retail monitors that are completely messed up. And then they need to do the whole swap around and wait. And this is at FULL PRICE!! And then they end up getting a factory refurb anyway, as a replacement.

As for your questions about pricing, the epinions page I linked has a list of the cheapest merchants the search engine could find. They average close to twice the price, and I know for a fact the shipping(even ground) will be about double.

What I would do is get the 1 year warranty add-on. This is just for piece of mind. If the monitor has a problem other than what normal wear and tear will cause, it will surface in a year's time. These better monitors also are meant for a longer service life than the cheapies. So I'm sure you'll get at least 8 years out of it, if it is trouble free the first year? In fact it most likely will last longer.

Also think of it this way, you are saving about half. So at the worst(I'm sure it will never come to this) you'll end up spending what you saved on a repair, or another monitor. Or by the time it has trouble, there will be better and cheaper monitors available.

The odds are in your favor. If it is damaged due to shipping, send it back and have them ship a new one. If it has a problem within 90 days have KDS take care of it. Buy the warranty and use it a lot, if the monitor has a fault it will most likely surface well before this period. But this is worst case, and you are still on top. The most likely scenario, is you get a great monitor, and save a bundle, and it lasts an extremly long time.

The one we got was GREAT! It came factory sealed, in great condition. It was indistinguisable from a retail unit. It even smelled new(that new plastic smell, and the way a monitor smells when you turn it on for the first time). The cosmetics looked new, and the packaging was as I said, the same as if you walked out of a store and opened it up off the shelf. If you didn't "know" there is no way to tell.

Like I said I'm jellous, his monitor does just about what mine can do, and cost 1/5th the price. Other than the slightly smaller screen and the upper res's and refresh rates I never use, it looks and performs the same.

Also to clarify, these aren't the refurbs you see at the computer shows, that are just tested, off lease or used monitors. They are new, and are straight from the KDS factory and are sealed and taped from them until you open the box. And KDS does warrant them, just not as long because at that price they would lose too much money from the smaller profit margin, and also why would anyone buy the retail if they did? So there aren't that same troubles that occur as what you described, as far as chasing down a computer show vendor, or the gray-market hell this can be at times with those.

They have the full lifetime expectancy from them, and are as I said at full specs(often better). And you will be dealing with KDS if god forbid the unlikely event happens you need them.

At that price I can't see how you could go wrong.

I bought my Optiquest from Onvia online, but only after finding an authorized warranty repair shop nearby my home. I could see no difference in bringing it back to Best Buy or taking to the local shop for Warranty work. Its not like you get to hook the monitor up at Best Buy before you leave to see how it works, and I got a great deal using coupons and free shipping. Look at all your options, I did my shopping at B&M, but ordered online for pricing.

Any reasons NOT to get this monitor?

It's either this one or a samsung 700NF...... i was wanting an AG flat 19" monitor, and I could afford this one....

OK I just ordered the KDS AV195TF and added the (1) year service plan..too bad shipping and handling was $55 to me in CA. But, I paid $705 for my Optiquest 17" 10 years ago at a computer show so if this one lasts even 2 years it will be worth the price. Now all I have to do is wait for it to arrive or wait for Tiger Direct to tell me that they already sold out of that monitor. I am sold on the SONY AG after this Optiquest I would not want anything else but having the flat screen display on this KDS will be an added bonus.

Thanks for you detailed and patient replies.

Samsung 700 HF for sure, I've been looking at 17 and 19" monitors and have decided on either the 700 NF or the 900 NF (or the 959 NF here in Europe). They are by far the nicest monitors I've seen compared to many others.
