.NEF to .tif converter

I have a whole ton of nikon raw images from someone's camera sitting in a folder with the .NEF extension. I'd like to have them in a .tif (or .png... whatever) format so I can use the GIMP to edit them. Is there a script or simple shell util I can use to do this? It'd be nice to do something like:

$: convertNEF *

in that directory. I've tried the ufraw plugin for the gimp but I don't seem to have it working quite right. Any suggestions?

pretty sure dcraw is the only library that supports NEF. I've used The GIMP with the ufraw plugin (which uses dcraw) in the past without a problem.

Ah, nevermind. For some reason a reboot fixed the problem?

I would open the GIMP, then open an image. A non-GIMP window would pop up and show me the image. I'd hit ok, and that window would close, then a GIMP error message would pop up and say that the ufraw plugin failed to load. I did a reboot for some other reason, and now it works fine. Go figure
