Negative effects of swallowing gum?

Well, ever since I got my braces off (end of May 2001), I've been going through roughly 1 pack of dentyne gum (those 12-piece chiclet size things). Now I don't swallow all the pieces, but I'd say an average of 6 or 7 ends up in my gut.

I know gum takes forever to digest, but are there any other negative effects?

when i read the title i coulda sworn that it said something that woulda gotten locked quick (despite being a more interesting discussion)

gum would take a long time to digest if it actually were to stay in your stomach until digested. the thing is that it just gets passed on with the rest of your unusuable wastes (#2). just like that weird phenomenon where kids eat pennies and other non-edibles. it would take a hundred years to digest that stuff, but fortunately that's not necessary. like that phase of ingesting pennies (etc.), it'll "pass".

 

Ewww! Why do you swallow them?

I used to swallow them when I was a kid . . . not because I liked to, but just because . . . I didn't care either way!

However, my French teacher told us a tale of a girl who used to swallow gum she chewed all the time until. . . , and ever since then, I thought I had enough. Even if my teacher's tale was false, I sure don't like the picture of putting or sticking some rubber in my body. :disgust:

Sorry I can't help you much with the technical part, but please don't promote a big belly for yourself . . . cuz it doesn't do your body justice, at all!! Hehehe!

I swallow all the gum I eat and I've swallowed many pounds of it over the years. Many many pounds. I'm not impacted. It just passes right through with the rest of my retid expulsions.

So many wrong people in this thread, and so many correct ones as well.

The stomach acid cannot digest it. Instead it passes right through your system. Thus the gum is like fiber. Fiber is good for us as it helps clean out the system, keeps us regular, and is the best way ever discovered to lose weight. I never spit my gum out. About 1 day later you see the gum pieces inside your next movement (if you care to look). No it isn't sticky. No it isn't gross. No I haven't been harmed. Yes I'm healthy and thin.

How many of you get your daily fiber requirements?

:disgust:That's the face that you are going to make when you are trying to poop the gum out in about 18 hours. It has no nutritional value and will not be digested. It will pass right through your digestive track. It won't get stuck or have any "negative" effects.

Just grab some reading material and go sit on thy throne and let it all out...
