Or ship dates? Does anyone know anything other than what's in the Press release?

The folks over at DigiTimes have written a short little piece on the new 1GHz C3 processor from VIA:
VIA Technologies on January 22 added one more product line to its C3 processor portfolio. Based on the company?s new-generation Nehemiah core, VIA?s latest C3 processors are manufactured on the 0.13-micron process and available now in both the Socket 370 CPGA (ceramic pin grid array) and EPGA (enhanced ball grid array) packaged modes.

The processors are priced at US$45 per unit in OEM volumes, VIA said.

Don't the current C3s line up almost exactly with Celerons at the same clock speed. ie: 800MHz C3 vs 800MHz Celeron? I thought they did and would expect the trend to continue.

No benchmarks, but according to this from c't magazine, the C3's FPU finally runs at full clock speed (instead of 1/2 as before) and the rest of the core has been redisigned as well. C't guesstimates a 10% to 15% increase in performance (at same clock speed) for standard apps.

currently the 733mhz C3 is about as fast as a 500mhz celeron, with this new core though its quite possible they could equal a celeron clock for clock. i dont think i would mind making an entertainment center pc with one of those if it still has its low thermal output qualites

Supposed to be around 11W max, so well within passive cooling domain if a bit of thought goes to cooler selection / case layout... BTW, they dropped 3DNow and switched to SSE, so there might be some additional performance benefit depending on what multimedia you run . BTW2, might become available with IO APIC -- so the tinkerers might want to keep their old S370 dual mobos a bit longer .

Hmmm I really thought the 'current' ones managed better then that.

Ahh the old Cyrix inside... I see they are still pimping the 1/2 power floating point unit. One thing about these chips is atleast they are consistent... they have been at 1/2 Floating Point power of an equivelently clocked intel chip since the p133 days.

Uh you didn't read the article did you? The new core has a full speed FPU.

Ahh they managed to catch up some but loose in other areas. The SSE insturctions were most of the gain. Still cool running!

Uhhh... you didn't read the graphs did you? The FPU may be full speed, but in most cases, it at best only equals 1/2 the performance of the intel chip.

I've always found it weird that the C3 has such poor memory performance. Synthetic memory benchmarks should be almost entirely a function of just the memory & chipset but the C3 always has horrible memory performance.

I guess the only benefit is that it is very cool running.

That, and of course the price.

BTW, something that might get overlooked by the performance minded crowd here -- these CPUs are simply good enough for almost all office and multimedia tasks (as long as multimedia is limited to playback). We're deploying P4 1.8 GHz machines currently because that's the slowest our main supplier has available, but I bet 95% of the users would not notice the difference between a C3 and a P4. The bottlenecks the average office user cares for are, IMO, elswhere -- network responsiveness, hd speed etc...
