So my neighbor lives at his girlfriends house out on longboat key, so as a result he only comes by once every month or so, sometimes longer. Unfortunately he seems to have left his garage door open this time, anyway I could close it for him? I feel bad, he's old, i'd guess 70-75....

Do you know where to find him? I'd go close it, and then try to get a hold of him and let him know.

Oh, and maybe let someone else on the street know you're doing so, so there are witnesses that you aren't going through his place or anything...

Just go press the close button inside the garage. How hard is that? Just don't trip the sensor on your way out.

Close it, put a pad lock on it, and push a note through his letterbox telling him that the key is at your place ready for whenever he comes home.

Press the button and don't hit the beam on your way out. If you can't do that then just pull the release handle and put it down manually then leave him a note.

Personally, I'd never set foot in my neighbor's garage if he wasn't home.
It'd be just my ****** luck that someone would see me, and report me for being a burglar...I'd notify the cops, and ask them to come out.
No sense putting yourself in the position of being accused of something you didn't do.
(lawyers have made being a good neighbor a bad thing)

You must live in a pretty crummy city. I'm on pretty good terms with my neighbors, and I wouldn't have a problem closing their garage door if I knew they'd be gone for a while.

just close it and pull an Indiana Jones move on the way out (jump the beam before the door hits you). You have nothing to worry about if nothing is stolen. Besides, it should be pretty obvious what you are doing to any neighbors who see you.

I wouldn't touch it. I know you're trying to do something nice but there is too high of a chance that he would absolutely not want you going into his home when he is not there. While most people would be fine with it I think a good amount of people would be really pissed off. Especially grumpy old men.

It has nothing to do with the city I live in, nor would I have a problem doing the same, BUT...
I'm on decent terms with most of my neighbors as well, but in most of America; "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished"...
SHOULD something happen, say his house gets burglarized while he's gone...someone remembers seeing you walking out of his garage while he was gone, will automatically put the presumption of guilt on you.
Therefore, you have to play CYA in anything you do.

Doesn't sound like this guy has much to be grumpy about...

Close the door ... if you're worried, contact another neighbor as a witness, but just close the door and don't agonize over the decision.

For being a good neighbor

<knock knock>
Cops: We have a report that you were in the neighbors garage
OP: Yeah, I notice he left it open and he only comes home once a month so I closed it for him.
Cops: Ok then, have a nice day.

If the neighbors are nosy enough to even notice the OP close the door they would be nosy enough to notice the door was left open and put 2 and 2 together.
