I feel your pain. My neighbors have at least 4 inbred barkers next door. Brother and sister dog had babies, and they keep up the cycle. They don't spay/neuter. I've lived with it too many years to count.

Kinda sucks. My pofs section 8 neighbors had a small pofs barking mouse dog that they would let out at 11, 12, 2AM in the morning, and that pofs would bark, non-stop, constantly, almost every friggin night. drove me insane. and my daughter was just born then too which sucked two ways from hell. her crying and that pofs dog yapping all night.

bear spray or any cayenne based spray , sprayed at their feet , where they will snort it up their nose is effective . Don't spray it all over like a spase or get it on their fur . Sure tip off to the owner . Ever watch a mail man? He/she will just shoot some on the ground behind them as they walk along . Stops all dogs cold . Like red fox urine will run off raccoons . Aces .

I don't agree with spraying someone's dog BTW. That's how a lot of shit starts and most times it don't end well.

I'm in a residential community. I've never heard of an HOA in Berkeley, CA. There is a noise ordinance with vague language as I said in the OP.

Last night I realized that I still hear barking at night, it's just not as frequent. Maybe because not so many people are walking by the fence in front of the guy's house.

A couple of weeks ago I was tarping my garage and from on top I could see two largish dogs, one black the other brown. But I never hear a litany of barking as if two dogs are barking. Maybe it's just one of those dogs that barks, the other keeps quiet. Seems weird, but don't know how else to explain it.

The barking is not like [BARK] [3 seconds] [BARK] [3 seconds] [BARK] [3 seconds] [BARK] [3 seconds]

There are really long roars that last up to ~10 seconds. It's like [ROARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR] [1/2 second] [ROARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR] [1/2 second] [ROARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR] [1/2 second] [ROARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR] [1/2 second]

Last night I turned in after 9:30PM and the dog was barking a fair amount, pretty loudly. I needed these to get to sleep:

Yes, I've been thinking that the next action on my part (I've done nothing so far other than post this thread) is to have a talk with the owner. However, I want to be prepared, not just walk up and knock on his door and go "you know, your dog(s) are driving me crazy, can you do something about that?" I already know he's not the most accommodating guy in the world. It took some cajoling to get him to clean up the more-than-a-hundred dog turds that littered his back yard and stunk things up big time a few years ago. However, he didn't just blow me off, he eventually started cleaning up, at least occasionally.

Regarding the massive poops in the yard, that probably is violating some laws about appropriate living conditions for animals, in addition to the smell factor.

The dogs might be barking b/c they live in such a shit hole. You might be able to go that route if you had to explain it to animal control or something.

By a drone that can hold a 16 ounce steak and then hover it over the dogs just out of range.

Remember who is on top of the food chain.

I feel really sorry for you. I never gave dogs much thought one way or the other until I moved into my current neighborhood. It ought to be called Dogpatch given that almost everyone has at least two or three in their backyards unchecked. Have two on either side and have spoken with the owners repeatedly over the five years I've owned this house. It works for a short time and then they get lazy and stop tending to them (and its back to barking). I don't want an all out war with them so I just put up with it and fume. Within a few years I should be able to sell and I have no intention of buying a house in town again. Close neighbors suck.

my neighbors have a yapper, used to yap all day long when they were at work.
animal control could only do anything if the dog barks before 6am or after 10pm.
one day i recorded their dog barking almost constant for 30 minutes.
the neighbor holds a outside bbq for their bible study group once a month when the weather is warm.
One time when they had the bbq i played the recording of their dog with the speakers pointed to their yard, within five minutes they called me and asked if i would quiet my dog . i said thats a recording of their dog, next day they had a citronella no bark training collar on that dog. i didnt think they would do more then just put the collar on the dog, but they worked with the dog and actually got it so when the collar went on the dog became much less vocal.

I can't disagree with this. My eastern neighbors are my best, maybe because they share a house. When you share you have a sense of the give and take of not annoying your neighbors. I used to share this house. When the owner decided to sell, I managed to buy it and subsequently kicked out my lazy roommates.

The other houses around me (there are 3 of them) have all been a big problem for me at one time or another. Mainly it's noise (there was the smelly dog doo problem, I made note of too). I try not to bug my neighbors. No dogs, keep the music down (most of the time), watch my movies using headphones.

Moving would get me away from those 3 problem houses. One of my criteria for another house would be quiet. Probably the best guarantee of quiet is not having close neighbors, period. Even that is no guarantee, but it would obviously really help.

Another suggestion would be a slingshot and shoot some Swedish meatballs to the noise makers, but make sure the balls are filled from sleepy-time medication and poison ivy. Little Ralphie will get the much needed sleep he deserves and the owners will get a nice itch to deal with long term.

2nd the bear spray idea. Probably want to make damned sure the owner isn't home and there are no witnesses when you hit them with it.
Witnesses would be unlikely, however I don't know how I'd know the owner wasn't home.

Lately the weather's been exceptionally cold and I think that's making matters worse. One Friday evening a few weeks ago the barking continued almost unabated until about 10PM, when I think the owner must have returned home and taken the dog inside. It was so loud that cramming silicone earplugs in my ears still didn't let me go to sleep (I usually go to bed by 9PM or so).

Last week was pretty quiet, I think the owner must have had Xmas week off and kept the dog inside what with the cold temperatures (low to mid-50s during the day).

I think the owner's back to work now, the dog's barking off and on during the day. It's just one of his two dogs that barks, the coal black one, the other keeps quiet, always, I never hear two dogs barking. But that one is just a monster.
No advice other than I can feel your pain.
I am so lucky my current neighbor's dogs are like 14 and rarely bark.

It would suck hearing that all the time and would make you a prisoner in your own house.
You wouldn't want to do anything outside.
Yesterday I took down the extensive bamboo trellises that I had up for my tomatoes and squash. It took me around 3 hours. The dog was barking most of the time. But I couldn't hear it most of the time because I had my MP3 player going and my earbuds crammed in my ears. Without that I would have gone nuts!

I have a Dachshund. Horrible apartment dogs, but not my choice.

I prefer boston terriers. He barked at his own reflection once, it scared us because he never barked.

The Dachshund though... barks at leaves...and...planes flying overhead... and movement. Its terrible.
I hate dogs & dog people.

Please do complain to the HOA and get that thing out of where it doesn't belong. Oh yea let me just go and buy 5/5 Mr. barky barks and put him in a 1,200 person apartment complex over the maintenance unit thats brilliant good job.

Sounds like a favela.

I'm having flashbacks of how our dogs would bark at the neighbors dogs through the door constantly. They were dumb and were like "oh they just want to play lets let them sniff each other under the door for 10mins" meanwhile I was either not home or some days back from a 16 hour shift or something.

pofs's is right.

Must've been an unemployed grandma or something who had all day to let her dog bark at our dogs christ are people stupid.

"Just talked..."

You're right and the reason is I don't want to get into it with him, at least not just now. Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing rather than do something stupid. If and when I do have that talk I want to be prepared, know what the issues are, know what I want to say, have a fair idea of what I'm going to say in case he says, this, says that. This isn't trivial. I don't want to blow it.

I had a chat in the gym a few weeks ago concerning this problem with a guy I met there, we've talked about this and that before, a savvy guy with a lot to say. His response was that people in the city don't realize, so often, that some breeds of dog just won't work out there, they are completely ill-suited by breeding, they will never be happy and many of those breeds will let everybody know by being awful barkers.

Man, I can relate.

In my town I see people walking their dogs all the time. It might warm your heart to see that but it leaves me cold.

I had a dog when I was around 12, we were bosom buddies but he chased cars and he died at around age 2. I was heartbroken when my parents announced that they'd put him down. I've never had a dog since. To me dogs are always someone else's and 98% of the time they belong to strangers and regard me with suspicion if not hostility. I've been bit by dogs commuting in the city on my bike and roller skates. I bought a couple of cans of Halt, don't carry them now because there are no threatening dogs on my usual commutes. Dogs (from my point of view) are loud, territorial, often aggressive, smelly, often uncouth creatures. Oh, and they shit on my lawn.

Talk to the guy about it politely and if he does nothing then start complaining.

I think people used to own dogs & proper dog breeds in more appropriate houses.

These days cuteness is more important. Way too many irresponsible owners. Nothing against dogs themselves, its just I've seen way too many bad owners.

Yea I agree 100%. I advised against a Dachshund in a city apartment because of the barking, stubbornness, and their difficulty on a leash, all fairly well known.

All she was thinking about I guess was that it is super cute and now we have it for 15 years.

Somehow "we can get a dog if its XYZ certain breeds" turned into "we can get a dog!!! yay!!!" FML.

OP - Be glad that is ALL you have.

We live in a neighborhood with stupid certain immigrants that apparently live by a cultural norm that essentially says "animals belong outside". They just leave their dogs outside all the time, all day. All night. Except here in Texas, we do get mildly cold winters. A few times it does get below freezing. These people are also too fucking stupid to realize that not every dog breed is built to handle harsh winters. Nor are they competent enough to know how to train a dog (much less their stupid kids).

So every single fucking night, we hear this stupid yelping dog that is probably asking for help because it's cold as balls outside and wants in. Honestly, part of me thinks it's torture. Thankfully it's not my next door neighbor, or I would be forced to do something about it. Even though they are across the street, I still hear that fucking dog a mile away every night.

Easy to criticize people from a distance. You are not walking in my shoes, I do not tell you how to live. Yea, maybe I should talk to him now, but I have plenty on my plate, it's not like I don't do anything.

Yup, it absolutely drove me up the wall a couple weeks ago when that dog barked virtually incessantly after dark until the owner evidently got home around 10PM. It was cold, I figured that's the reason. I'm sure it's getting colder where you are in Texas than here in Berkeley. The coldest I've experienced here is maybe 26 on the coldest night in the last 30 years, that was around 1991, we had a very cold week that year right around Xmas. This week's been chilly, but around 6 degrees higher. I'm hoping, but I've never seen a snow flake here!
