Those seem to be two different speeches, and I assume two different people (Sr and Jr). What did Jr. say after 911?

why would you assume different people? the columbia shuttle was destroyed in 2003, it would be appropriate for GWB to be giving the speech there.

there were many *many* speeches given after 9/11... I'm pretty sure every one of them is recorded, and transcripts available for perusal. how about YOU go find it?

I don't despise him. Some conservatives do because he tends to lean liberal, and as the daily beast article says he smacks of the Bill Maher-esque "I'm smarter than you" attitude which also annoys conservatives.

But anyway, that's not really the question. A scientist of his celebrity shouldn't be resorting to fabricating quotes to make his point.

Most people hate the truth when it makes them look bad.

Yeah, that must be it. Our egos are just so damned fragile, and our worldviews like houses of cards.

Moonie's titanic intellectual rigor seems to be taking root around here.

FTFY.

A handful of liberals that are regulars here are some of the dumbest people I've ever encountered that wear failure, helplessness, envy and bitter douche-baggery like badges of honor, but leave it to leftists to think they're actually smarter than everyone else.
Not all of us have a degree from a such a distinguished institution like Google University as you do.

Just informing you of what the science shows, that conservatives make up thei own altered reality if the real world displeases their egos.

I think it is OK to fabricate quotes to demonstrate ideas in an artistic way - and he conveys things with great artistry. His points aren't the fabricated quotes in of themselves, but as anecdotes for challenges that we need to overcome. I support his use of such techniques to get the mainstream discussion going.

However, such fabrications should be acknowledged. Keeping things 'hidden' only makes it appear to be some sort of agenda and distracts from what good he is trying to do.

I like Neil deGrasse Tyson well enough. For years - hipster cred incoming - well before he became quite mainstream. His hardcore followers, though, drive me insane. So many folks and social sites (e.g. I fucking love science) seem to be more about pithy quotes with crappy images of Tyson or Sagan. Looks like those legions of 'fans of science' are unnecessarily filtering the Wikipedia page.

The article author would have NDT figuratively burned at the stake for false quoting while he is engaged in nothing more than "Look what I found!! Grrr grrr! Outrage!!" journalism.

I also find the false quotes a little troubling and a valid issue but you're not going to get NDT or anyone else in the public spotlight to change their ways by writing sensationalist stories about their speaking style.

It all depends on your ultimate goal; writing inflammatory articles to push up your readership numbers/gleaning website hits for your publisher or pointing out discrepancies to your subject and asking them to be more accurate.
This. And I've never heard of Tyson being in any way despised by conservatives. I guess that's what happens when one defends gay marriage - one stops getting the official memos. Now if I could only stop getting the requests for money . . .

Did not vote in the poll because I do not care either way. Wikipedia is the collected knowledge of idiots.

He's a friggen astrophysicist, of course he is smarter than them (and me). Are there really politicians dumb enough to believe that they are the smartest people alive?

It does not work that way. It is not a matter of who is more intelligent. Let's say you have a Republican social conservative congressman pushing legislation that is based more other bible than science. For example, legislation to let public schools teach creationism as a science subject.

Now politicians all pick groups of like minded people for support. In some areas this means a group of people who are religious conservatives. So this legislation is popular in this district, and everyone likes Mr. Congressman. Mr Congressman supports his state legislatures in getting this done for his constituents.

Along comes Mr. Scientist who says whoa. Here is some science and some data, maybe we should rethink teaching creationism as a science subject. The congressman is now called to task so he is not happy with the scientist. His plan for his constituents may fall apart so he becomes upset with the scientist for hurting his re-election probabilities.

The problem is the politician who is above sensible reasoning and only exists to increase his stock portfolio while in congress.

What this has to do with quote fabrication... I dunno. Maybe just to show where some of the tension comes from.

Well, that's the celebrity part of it. Scientist and celebrity don't tend to mix well, as maintaining such a public role invariably leads to certain compromises in one's work. That isn't to say science doesn't need ambassadors like Tyson, but inherent pitfalls exist when achieving such exposure.

You should study history then. Christianity, Islam, and Jewish faiths are all from the same beginnings and "god".

So I guess all the Prophets that both Christians and Muslims recognize are associated with a different God even though they are the same people. It also funny how the Jesus you pray to is considered by Muslims to be another Prophet from God.

Jesus Christ is God Incarnated. Christian belief in God the Trinity

Muslims worship a false god who is actually a demon called Allah.

So why do Christians in the same region Jesus was born refer to God as Allah? Are they also worshiping a false God as well?
When Muslims recognize Jesus as a Prophet are they also recognizing a demon as well?

I've (unintentionally) mucked-up my information and quotes, recounted something in a flawed way, in good faith that I was more or less getting it right, when it wasn't. Everyone has.

Apologize, say you will try harder not to make those careless (but honest) mistakes, and move on.

Who those names refer to when they worship is what matters.

I name my cat Allah. Since Muslims worship Allah, would you say Muslims worship my cat?

Call God "God" or "Allah"...it all means the same thing. "Allah" isn't a personal name for God like Yahweh is...its simply the Arabic translation of God.
