Yesterday afternoon, while enjoying a cancer stick on my porch, my mind wandered and I wondered what would happen if I forgot a lighter in my pocket and it went in the wash, and subsequently, the drier. Would the compressed gas expand under heat, causing the lighter to rupture and starting a fire in the drier, surrounded by more flammable material, and burn my place the fuck down?

Today, I did my laundry. I forgot my blue Bic lighter in my pocket. My apartment is not on fire. Mad props Bic, mad props.

how hot is it inside a dryer?

Good question but obviously the lighter makers have that in mind...what do you think those dryer temps get up to? 160F? more?

not hot enough. You need something like 200 before the plastic will start losing its strength.

I thought so too. I'm still amazed this thing held up in the drier.

With flammable liquids, there is a "lower flammability limit" and an "upper flammability limit", so even if the plastics broke and some of the lighter fluid began to vaporize into the hot air it doesn't necessarily mean that it'll catch on fire, especially when you have only 1 lighter with maybe 1 fluid oz of fulid in a several gallons capacity of air in the dryer.

Try a pot on a griddle...don't think you can boil water with it even though it goes to 400F.

lol if it got hot enough in the dryer to light butane(or anything like that), your underpants would come out crispified as well.

Yup.

I didn't think it would just ignite the butane, I thought that if the pressure in the lighter got high enough under heat it would explode.

I've done that a couple times. Never had a problem. Lighters usually work afterwards. The pants do sometimes smell a bit like chemicals but no stains or anything
