Hi all, am trying to put together the Neo2 platinum with a AMD64 (939) @3000. Value PC 3200 DDR ram 512x2.
It will not post. The LEDs hang with all four lit up which says processor is incorrectly installed or defective. So had the processor replaced with a new one. Still will not post. LEDs say same thing. All the fans are running - the PSU, graphics card and the CPU fans. I have checked and followed the MSI reccomendations from their website - clear CMOS, remove battery etc. What am I doing wrong? Help!

What PSU is it? You have the 4 pin 12v connector hooked up too right?

Yes please give PSU readings. Also try taking out the second stick of memory and any extra peripherals.

Also it is Athlon NOT Athalon.

PSU is by Antec SL 350w.
Yes, I have both the power connectors hooked up and with one mem stick - no luck.
Thanks for the quick replies.

Hmmm...did you try each stick of ram seperatley in each single channel slot? Other than that I'd go with bad board as the problem.

Called retailer and she gave me a RMA number. Should I have a replacement board of the same or could you suggest something better. Thanks Dapunisher.

MSI's QC is dodgy IMO, so if you won't get hit for a restock fee and can get a full refund I'd go for the EPoX EP-9NDA3+

As stupid as it sounds, your MSI board will not support that processor unless you have the most recent bios. You will either need to have the retailer update the bios before they ship you the board, or you will need to find a .13 A64 939 pin to flash the bios yourself.

Good luck!

Another victim of not doing their homework before assembly. The MB is probalby just fine, just you didn't know it needs a bios update prior to being able to install a Winchester core CPU.There are a ton of posts regarding this very subject.
Like MrC4 sid above.Had you researched your components prior to making a list and buying you would have most likely found this out before hand.trial & error, hopefully you've learned and won't repeat this in the future.
Like MrC4 said, either send the board in to get flashed or find a friend that has a .13 micron S939 CPU you can temporarily install to get flashed up or find a local store that might do it also.Good luck.

Yesterday I ordered the following based on Anand's Nov 21 Gaming Buyer's Guide.

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
AMD Athlon 64 (939) 3200+ 512KB 90nm

I simply trusted his recommendation and didn't feel that I needed to do more research.

As far as I can tell, Jarred made no mention of the MB not supporting a 939 chip out-of-the-box.

So, am I hosed? I'm going to be pissed beyond belief if my MB/CPU combination doesn't work and that he failed to mention that I'd need to upgrade the BIOS. My only option is to send the board back.

Now that I see all the posts stating problems with this MB, I never would've bought it.

So, did I screw up in trusting Anandtech? I sure won't ever again.

The current boards revision are shipping with the latest bios which will work fine out of the box. If whoever you buy it from ships you an older stock then you'll need to flash it. Pretty sure i've read people who used one stick of ram to flash the bios then went on from there.
