Seems some really smart people in Japan found a new way to write data on SSDs. The real kicker is that it is a software change, any current drive should be able to use this new technique, provided appropriate firmware upgrades are released.

Here's the source article, it's in English:

So... BS or are we getting a great speed bump in our SSDs relatively soon?

Certainly hope it's true, would be very nice.

Win win all over that one if true.

I wonder if Intel, Samsung and others will actually spend resources to create the new firmware or if they'll just release a "next-gen" SSD that's using the new technique and use that as a driver for new sales?

Why would they give away free performance? Seems futile as a business...

From what I've been hearing and reading, this is pretty much snake oil.

Are there any technical articles showing this is BS? Can you link to one? Thanks!

Given the resources needed to validate such a change, new SSDs.

Though, I don't get what's particularly special about it. It only offers a great deal of help on non-server SSDs that have no TRIM or are basically full. It would be much better used on SD cards and the like, where TRIM/UNMAP aren't available. Basically, a neat trick that may be useful, compared to writing new data wherever (such as in the next page of a recently-erased block), but not even within an order of magnitude of their own results, with tests tailored to suit. Among other things, it will need a to-be-erased block that isn't full, by enough of a margin to accept most writes.
