Good god, I didn't notice this was from 2013.

I grew up in a very dysfunctional family as well (lots of conflict between parents; angry, loud, abusive father etc.). So, I kind of know what that feels like, but everyone's situation is a bit different.

Some years ago, I was prescribed an SSRI antidepressant named Fluvoxamine for anxiety. In 2011, I had a severe fluvoxamine induced manic episode that made me really high. I mean like a super good, super confident feeling high. It was a prescription drug induced phase which drove me out of my mind, and it mad me feel really good. During this time, I left college, made my grandfather buy me a really expensive guitar (I usually don't ask my guardians for anything fancy), told some of my family that I'd take some time off to make an album etc. I uploaded this Megadeth Medley video on YouTube during that time (I'm unable to open your nephew's recording but in my case, although I think my singing is boy-bandish, the guitar work is okay). The remnants of that foolish behaviour are on AnandTech as well. Of course, I never complicated things by having babies and going to prison.

When I came out of that "high" phase, I felt like an idiot.

I hope the guy's trying to make things better and the kids are doing okay. It's really hard on the kids when things like this happen.

BTW, did you record that song "Re-Rock and Roll"? I liked it.

I don't take any medications. One of the few on here I believe. I react to things the way a normal person does! Amaze!

Well, there are a couple factors at play here.

The problems in living that a person faces, i.e. social issues, domestic problems, traumatic life experiences etc.

A certain amount of biology at play in terms of a person's predisposition to anxiety, depression etc.

Problems in living are not solved by modifying brain chemistry with drugs. I mean obviously, if (hypothetically speaking) Godzilla came and trampled your city and you were scared that you'd die, chugging pills down your throat wouldn't remove the Godzilla (in the same vein that taking prescription drugs may not eliminate your social and family troubles, and things that you've been through). But prescription drugs can have a calming effect on the brain and help you focus better. That's the medicine part.

I don't see why someone should not take prescription pills if they're of some help? The nasty downside for some can be the side effects (like tremors from SSRIs etc.). I have since been very careful with prescription psychotropics since I had those SSRI induced manic episodes years ago.

Glad you're feeling better. And yes, I did lead and rhythm on that track with an Internet band (we all submitted a track). The singer is actually in a Led Zeppelin cover band. Sounds pretty close, doesn't he?
