Came across this gentleman the other day whose nephew (no step relations involved) is older than him.

The guy is the youngest of six brothers. The oldest brother's first son was born before his youngest brother was born (the person I am talking about)

I wonder how common such scenarios are?

I once dated a girl who was older than her uncle. She was apparently a big surprise for her mom and dad.

I have an uncle two years younger than me.
That said, I've never called him uncle. Only call him by his first name.

Not that uncommon?

Oh it is uncommon, but not unheard of.

Basically any couple that had a kid early in life together and then got a surprise later in life they weren't expecting. Usually because the woman thinks she's into menopause but surprise! she is not there yet. On top of that, the first set of kids early in life have to already have kids of their own at an early age too.

I think it was more common in earlier generations when people started reproducing early and had more kids. The two people I mentioned are in their 70s.

If we go back hundreds of years, I'm sure there would have been a lot more of it

age determines seniority, unless you are in line for the throne or something.

My uncle is 4 years younger than me. He's the youngest of eight kids, my mom is the 2nd oldest.

It's only weird if all you know is small family life.

I don't remember knowing such a person but I don't find it strange at all. Big age differences between siblings make that possible and that happens when people make a lot of kids. If you have two kids, they are probably five years apart etc. If you have 10 kids, the elder is on average twenty years older the youngest. In countries, where fertility rate is high, that has to be frequent. Perhaps, if you go live in some Asian country for some time, you'll come across many such cases.

Let me guess, you were somewhere in the south, more than likely Florida?

My dad's folks had several natural children, then adopted one, and another, and another, and another. They're almost 70 and have a middleschooler and a 3y/o in the house. The first two are as old as myself and my sister, so while I always thought that was unusual I never really minded because they're basically cousins to us. However, I thought it was pretty WTF when they got the second-to-last one several years ago, and then just a couple years ago we were all suddenly told that they're getting another and it was basically a done deal. I don't know all the details, but I'm pretty sure my dad (oldest of their natural kids) basically sat them down and told them to cut that shit right out. There is a very real possibility that they will both die of old age before their youngest makes it out of highschool. All the kids are taken care of well enough and they're in good health and nice people, but it really goes to show that not even successful smart people are exempt from dumbassery.

I know a few people. A guy at work has 5 kids and the difference between the youngest and oldest is about 30 years.

It used to be much more common when families had 5, 8, 10 or more kids spaced out over 20 or more years. I knew a number of families growing up where a younger kid was an aunt or uncle of an older one. My best friend was from a family of 11 kids. His youngest sister was born when his oldest sister was 25.

i have one of these in my family, and one of my friends does as well. my dad had 5 sisters and 5 brothers, so 11 total kids. my friend who is in this situation, his dad has 8 siblings, 9 total. it's really not that uncommon in old school catholic families with a lot of kids.

I think it's more common in situations where you have a guy that started a family early on and has kids (say he has one when he's 20-22) and stays married for years.

Turns 40 or 50 and gets divorced. He's a small company owner/big time baller/whatever and hooks up with a woman in her late 20's or early 30's. They get married when he's 50. When he's 55 she wants a kid and he needs to pass on the family company to another heir so he knocks her up when he's 55-60.

His first kids are now 30-40 years old. And have kids of their own. He's already a grandpa before he had another one.

I was sitting at breakfast with this exact type of guy this morning. He was late 50's and had a 35 year old with a 10 year old. The 55+ year old guy had a 7 & 9 year old of his own.

I've known several families that were in that situation.

A former boss of mine had a grandson that was older than his son.
Unless you're talking about someone marrying a woman who already had a son older than he is, it's the same relationship. The grandson is the nephew of the son.

My mom is the same age as her aunt.

My great grandma had a large brood, stretched over 20 or 25 years.

pretty close to happening in my family.

grandparents married young and had my dad early on. he's the oldest of like 7, though... the youngest in the family was only born a couple years before my sister (likewise, my aunt's kids feel more like nieces/nephews to me than cousins since they're so much younger than all my other cousins)

Didn't have that scenario, but my oldest nephew is just 2 years and 9 months younger than me. He was like my younger brother growing up.

I met someone with a dunkle the other day. It took me a second to put it all together, but sure enough...

I'm not older than my uncle, but we're pretty close in age. My mom was the oldest of ten kids (before anyone asks, not Catholic, just prolific) and my youngest uncle is only a few years older than me. I'm sure it's not that uncommon.

It could also be the result of vastly increased age of marriage for a lot of people, if one sibling got married and starting having kids early while the other waited until they were in their late 30s, which isn't all that uncommon now.
