Go Here.

Then click on continue. Do a search for "nero" and it will come up with a price of $3.00 +4.80 UPS ground shipping =$7.80.

UPDATE: I received this version in the mail and when I installed it, it gave me a message that it can only be installed with a specific CD-Burner. Thats not what it says at the website though. I urge you to email them or call them to get your money back.

UPDATE: I received the following email back from Microtech computers:

First thing, our site does say OEM version. Please search the web and find a better deal on this version of Nero. I think you will find that we have the best price anywhere. Yes it is a bundled version, but it is not illegal to sell it. We do not have a contract with Ahead Software, therefore are not bound by it's regulations.

What we can do is give you a different serial number that will add more drive compatibility to the version you have purchased. Please use the below code by opening Nero, click on Help, then click Enter New Serial Number:

xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

Thanks,

So I guess you can email them and get a serial so nero will work with your CD burner.

If it really is shipped by UPS it's not steep in the least. You can't get ground cheaper than 4.33 for 1 lb even shipping within a zone for residential . It's 5.10 for shipping from zone 1 to zone 8 for residential. Cheapest for commercial is 3.23 for 1lb within a zone. Most expensive is 4.00 for zone 1 to 8 for commercial. It's actually a really good price for UPS.

There's no such thing as a good deal for UPS. UPS sucks. If it's worth shipping at all, it's worth shipping Fedex, and Fedex ground is even cheaper than UPS ground in my experience.

It says

Nero Burning Rom Software Version 5.5 95/98/ME/2000/XP - OEM

but shows a picture of the retail box. I wonder what will actually get delivered, and is the OEM version crippled, like the OEM version of Adaptec EasyCD Creator?

This is kind of weird too, on the order page:

> Notice: All * fields are required! We are only accepting citizens
> of the United States at this time, all others please call our toll free
> number to place your orders. Thank you.

How do they know you're a citizen? Could be a permanent resident.

Seriously, I think they must mean U.S. residents.

Yep some Nero OEM versions will only work with certain manufaturers' burners. Beware

For what it's worth, a link from the site

Linkified

an excruciatingly slow loader, BTW.

Looks like not a whole lot more than what's already listed on Nero's site; I s'pose it's possible to be OEM specific. For $7.80, tho, it might be worth the risk to find out if it is in fact generic. I'd really like a copy of Nero for one of those $30 PacDigital 16X CDRWs from OD a couple weeks ago.

I don't about this deal specifically, but the Liteon burner I bought last week had Nero 5.5 software and CD label said the software would only work with the burner it was packaged with. On the other hand, its only $7.80 for a chance at some very good software.

I'm in for $7.80. I have 2 Lite-On CD-RW's (24x10x40 and 32x12x40), which came with Nero 5.5 and it seems to only work with the CD-RW it came with.

Here is a link to their "Features of Nero V5.0" page, which claims to list compatible CD-RW's (long list):

I think they cripple bundle disks not OEM, if there is a difference. I bought the OEM from a "expo" for $14 came home then found it doesn't work with XP. After swearing, went here from Ahead and downloaded the thing for free, used the serial,# that was on the OEM, and it worked perfectly. From site:
You are entitled to a free upgrade to Nero 5.5, if:
* You purchased a Nero 5.0 retail version
* You purchased a Nero 5.0 serial number from our web-site
* You purchased Nero 5.0 with your CD-R/RW drive Read: OEM

I think there are three versions to this. One is retail, another OEM which works only with a specific model, and a OEM which works with all models.

I received Nero with my new Cendyne RW drive from Staples (thanks Hot Deals)
I had never used it before.

It is really a great program with tons of features.
In addition to all its cd copying capabilities, it allows you to make a mix with your MP3s and burn them into a regular CD that will work in your home audio system.

I havent figured out if it can RIP mp3s yet.

Provided that this isn't an OEM version that is tied to a specific manufacturer's CD-RW drive, this is a great deal. IMO, Nero is the best all-around package for your burning needs. About the only thing that it doesn't do is copy Safedisc2-protected data CDs (you need something like CloneCD to do that). I would give this deal a try, but I have 3 LiteOn burners (24x and 32x Cendyne-packaged, and 40x LiteOn retail) and they all came with Nero.

Also note the full-version OEM WinXP Pro at the same site for this hot deal for the relatively low price of $149.99.
