I got a copy of NERO burning ROM with my TDK 12x burner. Does anyone know how to tell if this is a full version or an OEM version? The TDK was retail and I was able to upgrade it from 5.0 to 5.5 on the AHEAD/Nero website w/o a problem. Thanks....

Ironk....I am a skeptic by nature but I just dont think a company would sell maybe thousands of copies of a software that could only work with a particular burner.It must be unlocked to work with all and locked when it is packaged with a burner.But then I am wrong most of the time! MY 2 scents

Actually. one of the more notorious threads of the past was on Abilitycomputer's selling of these oem nero's. Yep, in every case they were burner specific. They bought them back, posting in these forums. Of course they wen't on to greater infamy. Check reselerratings for that.

If you check Nero's website, you can purchase an upgrade to a full version that will work with any drive for $19. Its in their faq section.
From their site:

Q.: Nero came with my CD recorder. I just bought another CD recorder, but when I try to use Nero with it, a message appears saying that it supports only the recorder it was bundled with. What should I do?
A.: You have an OEM version of Nero that works only with the brand of recorder it came with. However, you may update to the full version of Nero for the special price of US $19.

I just sent them an email with the serial number of the limited version and they sent me back the info to upgrade for $19.

I've ordered OEM nero probably 100 times in the past from a few different sites online. In no instance have I ever received a Burner specific package. I have received those with other burners I have bought my TDK and a Liteon both had those in it.
However a side note IF you had Nero installed be4 and it was BURNER SPECIFIC you must take out all the registry entries with it.. uninstalling I Believe will do this. Then install your unlimited version.
Also if you have a standard OEM version you can make it burner specific by using a burner specific serial number
The reverse is true as well but only after an uninstall. Nero makes fine software and deserves your moola. especially since they update almost once a month. I have never tried using an OEM or RETAIL number with a Burner specific package.. it MAY work. someone wanna try?

I am sure that using a non burner specific serial number will unlock the program. All I did once I purchased the upgrade was type in the new serial number and it unlocked my version for use with my Plextor - the locked version was from the Staples Cendyne(Liteon) deal.
I was going to buy the software anyway, got the burner as a backup for free considering they want $50 to register it. Wanted to support a company with a great product.

IronK since you have bought the package just find a serial number for a different non burner specific package i'm sure there are some
around the net somewhere I probably have used the same key 30 times because i don't open every package i get just the first couple since i upgrade as soon as it's installed anyways. what matters to ahead is that you PAID for it.

That's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks. I've got a copy that came with my Lite-On burner. Hopefully this will let me use it with my Toshiba CD-RW/DVD.



BTW, about the one everyone bought, anyone know what brand it is supposed to be bundled with???

the nero that comes with the cendyne 8x and hi-val 16x have worked with my samsung 16x and philips 4x respectively.
i don't know anything about this deal though, just wanted to toss in on the oem discussion

The thing is that when I install it, it doesn't prompt for a serial number. Also, it didn't come with a serial number anyways.

I received my disk last night and it has printed on the label that it was produced for distribution with a CD recorder hardware. That said, I had no problem installing and using it with my Ricoh DVD/CD-RW drive. It would seem to be a remarkable coincidence if this was packaged to work with my drive (particularly because my drive was bundled with Prassi software). I am going to try it with my firewire-connected Mitsumi over the weekend, and I will post again. For me, so far - so good. Thanks Ironk!

I was fleeced on a 'deal' like this.

Don't waste your time repeatedly trying to contact these folks. Just dispute it with your credit card company. I received a credit in about two weeks.

To be safe, send one email or a snailmail letter to prove you tried to rectify the situation. Beyond that don't waste your time with them.

Here is the solution from nero's website:
Q.: Nero came with my CD recorder (or computer), and did not require me to enter a serial number. How can I find out what my serial number is?

A.: Do the following:
Click the Windows Start button, then click Run.
Type the word ?regedit" (without the quotes), then click OK.
The Registry Editor window appears. In the data ?tree? on the left, double-click the corresponding keys until you have opened the following full key:

HKEY _CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero ? Burning ROM\infoIn the box at right, double-click the name serial and write down your serial number.
