I hope you enjoyed your short stay here on AT.

LOL, that would be sad. ironk, there are direct links and inferred or hinted at links to stuff like that. The first option might be considered a no-no while the second would at least, keep ypu posting. Google search always works.

You people are AWSOME!

Thank You ironK for starting this, and everyone else who had 2 cents to add. It really added up. I don't have a sole to turn to for any kind of help. So forums are my savior. This has been one of the best threads ever!

I got in on a good deal. Then it seemed like it wasn't a deal at all. Then it was.
I learned something about Regedit, learned something about serial numbers and discovered Nero. I have been using Adaptec since it came with my computer. Nero is so coooooooooooooool. Some really interesting features. The best feature is " it worked" when my Adaptec wouldn't. I also found out I can ship parcels cheaper on Fedex than UPS. "Who New"?

Tomorrow morning when I go cycling, I'll have a big _hit grin on my face. I love to "Learn" even more than I love a hot deal. And I love to share what I learn even more than that............................

QUESTION: I have Nero 5.0 that came with TDK burner. I used the Nero instructions on how to find out what the serial number is. I also was able to ascertain serial number website for most burners. However, I was not able to determine a RETAIL/non OEM serial number. How does the software know that with a Non OEM/Retail serial number, the software will be non hardware specific?

What we can do is give you a different serial number that will add more drive compatibility to the version you have purchased. Please use the below code by opening nero, click on Help, then click Enter New Serial Number:

xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
Interesting, I hope they are not getting this serial number from a warez/cracker/usergroup site.

What's the point of buying such oem software.
They take out the cd from hardware bundle to sell to you alone or it could be fake or pirate.
Using such software = using pirate or download from warez site or using crack/key generator.
You didn't pay anything to the software maker.

Why ask why? It's a bonafide deal! This merchant is reputable and will help you with alternate s/ns if you need them. They must be doing something right with the software manufacturer. Is robbing out of a bundle w/hardware the only way they could or would obtain this? This deal is not fake or pirate. It should in no way be associated in the same thread with the words warez or crack! Can you say THREADCRAP?

They state "no support on software" online, yet when I emailed them for help, they provided it. First with an alternate s/n and secondly to point out the blatantly obvious "get the free upgrade" for my specific burner ...I'm good at feeling stupid. This might also be one of those times. The use of question marks is optional.

ironk, Again, thanks for the deal!

Yes, I'm thread crapping on this deal.

Why let some vendors make easy money by selling oem version software illegally?
What's your point of buying illegal oem version software?

What I'm trying to understand is:

How do you know this is illegal? I really don't mean any disrespect, I just want to know, because I don't want to be illegitimate.
...and deals like this seem to be flourishing.

For cd burning software, the software maker sells it very cheap to the cd-rw drive manufacturer to let them bundle it with their drive as a selling point and also help the software maker to spread their software, the drive manufacturer cannot sell this software to someone else alone. Don't you always see something like "this software is for bundle with this hardware only, not for resale" on the cd?

For oem hardware, the manufacturer sells it very cheap too, the requirement is to bundle it with system or other hardware, they don't want the distributor, wholesaler and reseller/retailer to sell it alone, that'll affect their retail channel sales. Like the MS intellimouse optical, retail msrp is $45, oem version (just the mouse, no retail box) from online vendors is just $20 (supposed to buy with other hardware).

Back to this deal, this reseller got some nero oem version from either grey market or taken from other cd-rw drives, this Nero could be a cd-rw drive specified version, so they give you another serial number to make it workable on any drive, isn't this same as you download Nero demo version and use a key generator from warez site? This CD is legit but the way the reseller aquired it and sell it is not legit, you buy such version software doesn't help the software industry, you're helping the computer grey market only.

Thanks for stating your point of view Kingofcomputer. I think I understand what you're saying now. And, I really appreciate your diplomacy in response to my frustration and ignorance.

You are truly a gentleman and a scholar.

The most important part of legal software is the license, how you get the license, do you pay enough for the license. The media, on the other hand, is not so important.

MS is very strict on this, for oem version windows, beside you must buy it with system or major pc component, you need to put the cd key sticker on the machine, once you install an oem version windows into this machine, you cannot move it to another machine even you delete it from this machine. For retail version, you can move it from 1 machine to another freely if you delete it from the original machine. This is because they're 2 different licenses, you pay different price on different licenses.

Of course, for home use, you don't need to take that seriously, but for office/company, you need to be very careful on this. You may end up paying for some software but not getting a legit license and being sued by the software maker or BSA - for example, if buy this Nero for use in your company.
