I'll talk about my Nero troubles later. The point is, Nero's pissed me off enough to uninstall it, scratch the disk, and throw the damn thing out of the window. No, I will not give it another chance. I would like to know of some alternatives. I am creating DVDs for my video files to save HD space. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: If possible, I'd like the program to let me use .avis and it'll recode them. And yes, I have tried WinAVI, it doesn't work for me.

Nero worked great for me I love it. You might want to try Roxio DVD Media Creator 9. Roxio and Nero are fighting for DVD creative supreme.

Try CD burner XP, its free as well.

Another one to try is Sonic, though I don't think it's free, so try CD burner XP first and see if you like it.

I like that Ashampoo burning software, its real fast loading times, and easy of use operation makes it very appealing.

I'll second the vote for Ashampoo Burning Studio. No bloat and easy to use. They have promos every now and again so I've gotten version 6 and 6.5 for free. The current version is 7 and one of the new features is video encoding, which is what you want but I've never tried version 7 so can't comment. They have a 30 day trial version you can download. If you decide to buy it here's a hint- you can haggle with the price with this company.

This prog is amazing! I didn't even mess around with the menus and it's really pretty. And the videos look even better! Thanks for showing me this. And I use both Deep Burner and CDBurner XP. I use those proggys for burning isos to discs. I used to use DVD Styler along with CD Burner XP, but that was too time consuming.

you might be having probs with "Nero 7.x".... i did too. try version 6.x and you will be fine. no bloat and no probs.

if you dont want anything with Nero anymore, i would suggest "CDBurnerXP" as well. works fine and is free.

Try Roxio.
And not that pussy version included for free with most burners.
Go to Staples or OfficeMax and pay for the good version. Lots of nice tools and very easy to use.

ashampoo-amazing is right! what a great program nice lean and stable. I feel guilty taking 6.5 for free.

I got tired of the out of sync issues when converting some AVIs with Nero, so I switched to ConvertXtoDVD and am very happy with it. It's fast and looks good when burned.

Nero started out as a really good program.
But the latest versions are just too bloated for my taste.
I use cdburner xp and total commander with the plugins.

Since you are converting avis to dvds I would recommend convertxtodvd then burn with imgburn. Or just burn with convertxtodvd also.

nero 7 isn't bloated if you uncheck stuff you don't need during install.

i found it annoying as installing nero takes longer now (as you must uncheck various things you dont want)
but other then that no problems.
