Nero "Burn" button suddenly grayed out

I have got the NEC NC-3520A burner for about 5 months, and been using Nero 6.0 with it without any problem until this past weekend. When I try to burn a DVD in Nero, the Burn button is grayed out. There are no error messages. Rebooting the machine didn't help. I have also tried different brands of DVD-R's, so it's not the disc's problem.

In Windows Explorer (XP), the drive shows up as a "CD-Drive". Nero DiskInfo tool correctly identifies the drive though, as well as the blank DVD-R in it. The device driver is shown "working properly" in Windows Device Manager as well.

Has anybody seen this before? Does this smell like a piece of failed hardware?

If Windows is only recognizing it as a CD-Drive, then that would be a problem. Have you made any changes lately such as updating the drives Firmware? Is there another computer you can put the drive in and see if Windows recognizes it properly?

before removing the drive and testing it on another computer, i would just try somehting really simple and uninstall nero completely, reboot, reinstall and see if that works...

another thing you could try is install another burning app (im sure theres something shareware or freeware out there) so you could test whether its a nero problem or drive/media problem...

OK here's the latest. I uninstalled Nero, rebooted, reinstalled it. Still the same. I can use another program that relies on Nero to burn DVDs successfully. I can use Nero to burn data dvds. The button just stays grayed out when I try to burn a DVD-Video.

Clues anybody?

Looks like you're missing the necessary plug-ins. Is that a registered copy of Nero? I'd try another software suite to be sure.

I did pay for the license key I used with this Nero. Do I need to install the whole suite for it to work?
