Nero is too smart for it's own good...

I picked up a couple CDRW's at target to make music mixes from my MP3 for my car on the way to work, and for school during PE, and the best ones they had were 4x TDK 80 minutes. Somehow, Nero figures out that they're only 4x compatible and won't let me burn at higher speeds...I'm using Nero 5.5 and a Yamaha 16/10/40... Anyone know a way around this? I'm sure I could get 6 or maybe 8x out of them... 20-25 minutes is just too long!

I forget the reasoning behind it, but CDRW disks have the speed hard coded onto them somehow.. Not sure why they do that, perhaps they are less tolerant to "overclocking" than normal CDR's?

same problem but with ricoh 7200A and nero 5.5. It prevents me from recording faster than 12x or re-write faster than 4x using ordinary media. Any help?

You need specialy formulated high speed cdrw disks to burn higher than 4X.

I got a cdrw drive that only does 2X & 4X cdrw and i got some high speed cdrw disks at the store & my burner would not even burn them at any speed.

So yes Nero is smart but you need the right media do get the right speeds, regular cdrw disks will only got as fast as 4X,you need to buy special High speed cdrw dirsk if you want to rewrite faster than 4x.

First, CDRW's will not play on most audio cd players, better pick CDR's for it.
Second, if you want to burn faster you got to use the ones specially made for 8x or 10x.
There's no prob with Nero. If somehow it will let you try it, you wouldn't like the results.

Yes, buy media at a higher rated speed. Nero does this for a reason, so they dont hear or have complaints spread about how Nero burns coasters.

I dont think its possible to burn 4x CDRWs at anything higher. I got some TDK "High Speed" CDRWs and they are able to burn at 10x using Nero.

ok, but what about my problem with ordinary cdrs not being able to record at more than 12x. 20x only appeared once and suddendly dissapeared.

are you sure you have 20x capable media? 20x media has only been "commercially" available for a short time and is $$$. If you do have 20x media, can your system handle that speed? You must be trying to go HD>cdr right? you can not copy cd>cd at 20x (yet).

Yeah I yhink you got the number confused, I think
the 20x you're talking about is probably the Read speed.
(I haven't heard of any blank media capable of 20x write yet)
And yes you need faster media, never heard anyone burning
(and getting good results) faster than the media rated speed.
16/10/40 - just in case, first number is write speed, second
is rewrite speed and third is just read. And another thing
you nee dto make sure that all your cdplayers are "newer" and
are capable of reading CDRW if not you're just wasting money
on media that you will only be able to listen to on your PC.
This I believe covers all the possible questions.

dervish is right most Cd players will not play CDR's so save yourself the hassle, some time, and some coasters by just using plain high speed CDR media.

I have been using Nero 5.5 with my AOpen CRW-1232 at 12x without any problem.

Perhaps it depend on the media?

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to record at such high speeds? Are you aware that real audiophiles usually stay with 1x or 2x? Is speed such an important issue to you?

Most readily available CDRWs are rated for up to 4x operation. The less common and more expensive "High-Speed CDRWs" are rated up to 10x and are effectively a different media....they will not burn at speeds lower than 4x.

As for CDRs, most that are readily available are rated for up to 12x or 16x writing....I don't think I have seen any 20x media yet.
