Nero Video Codec?

Hell, just wondering if there is such a thing.

Here is what happened, I was able to play all video files on my computer using the Windows Media player. But as soon as I uninstalled my Nero trial version, I cannot play certain movie files/clips. This certainly looked like Nero loaded certain Codecs that got uninstalled when I removed Nero.

CAn someone help me with this and also any product replacements that is available that will allow me to play these movies?

(I don't need Nero as I use another software to burn )

Thanks

Yes, Nero includes a super catch-all video codec that plays MPEG1/2/4. Depending on what the video is, you're going to need to install a real codec(e.g. Xvid, CoreAVC, etc).

I am not sure. It says MPEG and I have already installed Divx ,FFdshow, and Xvid, it plays most fines but just not this one. But If I install the nero suite, it plays it.

So can this Nero catch all codec be gotten or they sell it.

What software are you using to play the file, and what is the extension of it?

Using Windows Media player. When Nero Suite was installed, it played, but when I uninstalled due to the fact it was a trial version, no longer plays. I already have Divx, Xvid, ffdshow installed in the system. ANd it plays 90% of the movie files I have all using Windows media player.

What's the extension of the file? You may also want to try the VLC Player quickly to see if it plays, VLC can tell you exactly what kind of file it is, which would help us figure out what codec you're missing. Nero's codec sucks and should be avoided at all costs.

With ffdshow there is not really any need for DivX and XviD unless perhaps encoding so I would uninstall those and enable ffdshow's libavcodec for decoding such MPEG-4 ASP.

Meanwhile... find out the problem clips' specs with MediaInfo (sourceforge), GSpot, or such. Then, chances are, ffdshow's relevant decoder can likewise be enabled without the need for Nero. The main benefit of the Nero decoders is commercial grade and particularly DxVA. However, they are limited to use within ShowTime and not as good as those from CyberLink which can be used within universal DirectShow players such as Media Player Classic and Zoom Player. If not particularly attached to WMP, I strongly recommend MPC: it's simple yet powerful and without limitations.

I'd wager it's MPEG2 then and you don't have an MPEG2 codec installed(whereas MPC comes with a built-in MPEG2 codec).

I thought ffdshow, xvid would have that covered?

Xvid isn't MPEG2, and I don't think FFDShow has MPEG2 enabled by default(I don't use FFDShow)

Yeah, i once did a clean install of XP SP2. I installed Office and Nero and then went away for a while. I didn't realize until a week or so later that I never installed any video codecs and my files were all playing through 'Nero Video Filter'.

It's actually really good - particularly when playing using Nero Showtime. But in WMP, I had a file that had a slight corruption (barely a second long) and WMP would crash at that point. I installed the official DivX codec and it handled minor corruptions/syncing issues much better.

I don't use any of the codec packs or ffdshow - I check what type of file it is using Gspot and just get the official codec for that.
