NERO work around

I bought a Lite On DVD burner and installed it. Problem. NERO gives me a message that it will only work with the original drive that came with the pc. Is there anyway to work around this, or will I have to get a new copy of NERO? Sonic MyDVD came with the new burner, but it looks like it will be harder to burn a cd with it than NERO.

There is a work-around but it's not legal. Nero OEM software is tied to the hardware. I smell a lock coming on in this thread.

I'm afraid you have to buy the upgrade to the standard non-OEM version. And in that case your only choice may be paying for Nero 6. I don't know if they still offer 5.5 for sale.

I presumed I would have to buy the latest NERO. It looks as if it does a lot more than the 5.5 I have.

thebruiser,

Open up your PM and I can help you. You actually paid for that software so you should be able to use it. I bought my version with my TDK and later got a Plextor which came with EasyCD Creator. I have a work around. Email me or open up your PM so I can help. It is real simple.

You paid for a license to use the software by their rules, not for the software.

Find and download DeepBurner. It is a free prog and will do anything that Nero does and burns ISO's better than anything else.

Their license does not state what their rules are in reference to the topic.

Looking at the rules, it states that an OEM copy (that which will have come with the CD-RW) is usable on one machine at a time.
It does not stipulate that the machine must have the DC-RW installed, so it would (I believe) be legal to find a way to use the software with the new drive, since it doesn't state in the EULA, that I could see, that the software was tied to only one drive.

I. Grant of license
This Ahead license agreement (license) permits you to use one copy of the Software acquired with this license on any single computer, provided the Software is in use on only one computer at any time. If you have a multiple license for the Software, you may then have as many copies of the Software as you have licenses, in use at any time. The Software is in use on a computer when it is loaded into the temporary memory or installed into the permanent memory (e.g. hard disk, CD ROM, or other storage device) of that computer, except that a copy installed on a network server for the sole purpose of distribution to other computers is not in use. If the anticipated number of users of the Software will exceed the number of applicable licenses, then you must have a reasonable mechanism or process in place to assure that the number of persons using the Software concurrently does not exceed the number of licenses. Should one person use a computer on which the Software is permanently installed, either on the hard disk or other storage device of the computer (other than a network server), for more than 80% of the time it is in use, then that person may also use the Software on a portable or home computer.

You are only licensed to use the Software if purchased as a bundle with CD/DVD-Recording hardware.

one copy of the Software acquired with this license on any single computer

You are only licensed to use the Software if purchased as a bundle with CD/DVD-Recording hardware
This does not state that it must be used with aforementioned drive.
It just means you can't use it if you bought it on its own.
So I think the OP should be able to crack the software, since he will be using it within the terms of the software.

Lonyo,

That is what I understood also. I still have a copy of the EULA on CD just in case this topic ever came up. Their license does not state anything about not being able to use their software with any other dirve, it only states you are licensed to use it if bought with CD/DVD hardware. That was the closest thing I could find in regards to this matter.

I went through my old discs and found an older retail version of NERO. I've updated it and it works. Now, I have another problem. I downloaded Deepburner, and everything appeared to go normally, until I tried to use it. When I click on it to open it, it starts to install itself again. Anyone know what's going on with that? I have XP Home.

Congress returns to the DMCRA
The House of Representatives is holding a hearing on Wednesday to discuss the Digital Media Consumers' Rights Act (DMCRA), also known as HR107. This bill was originally introduced in the House in February 2003 (see our previous coverage), but it has not seen the light of day since. It is intended to revise the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998, which has been decried for years as unconstitutional and unfair to consumers.

Where's that smiley of the guy peeing when you really need it? I want to put it next to the DMCA.

Seriously though, the way I see it he paid for the drive and software and (IMO) he should be allowed to upgrade his drive and still use the software, legal or not.

He got software with the DVD drive too.

Should be allowed doesn't mean squat anymore.

Yep, I got software with the dvd drive, Sonic My Dvd, and it don't work. I've contacted Sonic's support people, but so far none of their tips have worked.

If Ahead did not have a issue with you using Nero OEM software with a different burner why would they go to the trouble of adding a reg check in the application.

For you to spend more money, when you should be able to use the software you bought in the first place.

Anyway, I'm glad to see it's working for the AT members who are faced with the same problem as bruiser. I will continue to reply to any PM/email requesting help.

Strange - I got a copy of 5.5 with my CD-RW drive as well. I've since upgraded, and the same copy of NERO still works on my machine with a different burner....
