It seems the government just wont quit with their war on the internet. If it's not SOPA, it's ACTA, if it's not ACTA, it's something else, now this. They just wont quit. We have to constantly be fighting all these bills and stuff and it's getting really old.

Yes, but this time, it was the mid level judiciary which overturned a fine, progressive order from the FCC. My feeling is, a corrupt judge backed by reps of big business.

Jan 26 update:

Got this mail from Al Franken, I cherish him, am on his mailing list. And, if Al is taking this as seriously as he is.....that is significant. Al is in no way a dilettante. Pls consider signing.....I will paste:

Dear xxxx

Net neutrality is in deep trouble.

If you’re new to this fight: Net neutrality is the principle that all websites should be treated the same by Internet providers and not given a leg up for any reason. The website of a mom-and-pop small business shouldn’t load any slower than the website of their multi-national conglomerate competitor.

But a federal court just stopped net neutrality rules from going into effect, opening the door for the big telecom corporations to give their preferred content an unfair advantage.

We need to fight back -- click here to sign my petition in support of net neutrality.

Without net neutrality, these big telecom corporations could become gatekeepers to the Internet. Small businesses could face an even more uneven playing field than they already do. Independent content could become harder and harder to find online. And you could wind up paying more to access the sites you want to surf.

Big companies like Verizon, Comcast, and Time Warner shouldn’t get to decide who can use the fast lane on the information superhighway -- which, after all, was developed at taxpayer expense and has been open to us all by design.

But if this court ruling is the final word, there will be nothing to stop Internet providers from violating net neutrality.

Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen -- click here to sign on in support of net neutrality!

I talk to Minnesotans every day who are sick of paying more for less when it comes to broadband Internet. And I don’t want to see that trend continue.

That’s why I’ve been proud to lead the fight in support of net neutrality. But now, with this court ruling dealing us a huge setback, I need you with me in that fight more than ever.

Click here to say you support net neutrality and let’s organize to make sure we protect it.

Thanks,

Al

P.S.: If net neutrality is destroyed, telecom companies could even make it harder to access content that challenges their control of the Internet -- a good reason to sign our petition!

I think the only solution at this point is seriously looking into a darknet. Not a darknet on top of the existing internet, but actually running our own fibre and point to point wireless backhauls. A meshnet, basically.

There's a project going on for this: http://www.reddit.com/r/darknetplan/

I really hope it works out in the long run. The biggest burden to physical links is money, as well as government regulation, as they could easily just make the whole thing illegal, which is probably what's going to happen. Currently most of the backhauls are still over the existing internet, but at least it's a network where everyone has more control. I've been wanting to setup a node myself. Waiting till I upgrade my VM environment, as it will be virtualized.

The internet is too free for their liking, they want control and they dont want just a little bit.

That'd be neat and a chance to set up a WAN in a pure IPv6 environment instead of the headache of transitioning to v6. The cost of a new say blown fiber infrastructure puts it outside of the realm of possibility but if there were a few major backers I could see a mesh of strategically placed WiMax access points being a sweet project. My coworker was involved in a project that fell through because of a lack of funding where he and somebody else were placing WiFi access points around town onto billboards with solar power backup and would provide redundant pathways to the internet. Cool stuff.

Yeah if I had the startup capital I'd seriously want to back this further. What I'd probably want to do is start a regular ISP to establish the backbone then use said backbone for the meshnet as well. When you subscribe to get service you would get both services, the meshnet would be free and then you'd get the regular internet. The meshnet is still too new, so people would not pay for that on it's own, so best bet is offering regular internet while having the meshnet piggy back on those same links.

People are always talking about p2p wireless links, and while those are great for local mesh, for the big long distance backhaul bandwidth it's really fibre you want.
