Net Send? How Do I use it to send to all users on LAN?

I want to use Net Send command to message everybody on the LAN. How would I go about this? What information do I need to know?

I know that I use Net Send [Computer Name] [Message]. However, I tried to send a message to an XP machine, but it couldn't find it. What would be the potential issue with that?

Use * instead of an IP. What ever you do, don't do this on a large network or at school. You could expelled or suspended.
Also, Xp's firewall blocks this.

Inside a domain, net send /domain: domainname message

Where X is the command you are trying find out about.

If you're doing this from a server that users authenticate to, then you can use:

net send /users

and then type your message. If I need to reboot a server, I use this method with emails to make sure people see what's happening.

If the messenger service is not running on the XP machine net send won't work. Don't confuse it with Instant Messager, however.

I did. Unfortunately it doesn't provide much help. Just the syntax, which I already know.

Yup, I restarted the Messenger service, but I still couldn't send it to the xp machine.

I want to have a script to send a message to all the users on our lan, consisting of win2k and winxp machines, whenever they shouldn't print. Just want a simple way to do it, without having to installing additional software..

Here is another one.

JBH's netsend gui 2.2 for WinNT/Win2k/Win XP.

And if this one is No Good, there is a lot of programs that might help. You can find them if you search, and search is free.

Hehe a friend of mine accidentally did this at work the other day -- accidentally sent a message to all users on the network instead of the PC next to him, good thing all it said was 'test' lol
