Unfortunately you have to have a minimal MacOS install to boot the machine and run the bootloader. No way around that, AFAIK. But you can get away with a <10MB partition for a minimal install of MacOS 7.5, how big is your drive?

One of the great things about Mac OS is that it is increadibly small when you break it down.

well, i got the install down to about seven and a half meg, have the box up and running pretty well. am thinking about seeing how well a 16 mhz proc can handle a gui..... is tehre a way i can stick the booter in the extensions sir and make it start up as the box comes up....or make it start w/o user intervention?<i tried just sticking teh booter in the extensions dir, and nothing happened on boot....is there something ihave to do to it first? >
thnx,
Craig

Does that machine boot from CD? If it does, could you have it load netBSD from that? (I don't know much about Macs in general and even less about old ones )

i installed linux on a power mac clone about 6 years ago, i seem to remember that there is some sort of key combination that you hold down while it is booting.. i think that if you hold down 'c' while it is booting, it will boot off of the cd.. i vaguely remember some ofther keystokes that you hold down to get into the firmware, but its been so long...

I run PPC Debian linux on a first-generation PowerMac and the Apple MkLinux bootloader lets you choose whether to boot Linux or MacOS by default. My machine loads linux automatically. Of course you do see the the MacOS load first, then the linux kernel. But I don't have to press a key or anything.
