Netflix and my PS3 are starting to annoy me...

It's great that Sony updates their console regularly. But these almost weekly updates are getting really old. The last two or three weekends that I've gone in to fire up Netflix on the PS3 I've been forced to download a system update before I can sign into the PSN network...and you have to sign into that before Netflix will fire up.

So instead of sitting down and watching a movie "instantly" I'm forced to sit through a 20 minute download...and then a 5 minute install and then I can finally get on with my movie.

There's got to be a better way to manage these things...

I'm surprised it's taking that long for you to update. I think the last update (3.6) only took 3-5 minutes tops. Are you connected via WiFi? I do recall people always having update problems with WiFi.

EDIT:

I do recall when I updated my mom's PS3 around Christmas time that it took forever over WiFi and their connection isn't that slow. It made me wonder if it would've been faster to use the USB update method.

Nope. I'm hardwired right into the router on a 6mb cable connection. It's ALWAYS been slow for me. Some of the original updates would take in excess of 45 minutes.

Watch out in these parts, when I used to say my PS3 would take too long to update, people would blame my network configuration, etc. instead of it being an issue with the PS3. You'll have people in here shortly on how to modify your network settings, though - perhaps it'll help.

I'd say the number of people with slow downloads far outweigh the people who claim it's just the network. PSN is slow and more often than not acts like complete garbage. But there will be somebody here who claims we just have a slow connection. Maybe ravenseal?

That's odd, I'd thought I've only done 2 updates this year and the couple of version history pages I found on Google confirm that:
- 3.60 March 10, 201
- 3.56 January 27, 2011
- 3.55 December 7, 2010
- 3.50 September 21, 2010

So: 4 updates in the last 6 months, roughly one every 6 weeks.

What's annoying me about Netflix lately is they allegedly have different versions of their app that they try with different customers, and the one I'm getting now only shows the instant queue, it's missing the "recently added" and "recommended for you" sections.

Yes there is. You can actually set your PS3 to check for downloads and install them automatically on a schedule. Unfortunately you have to have PSN Plus to use this option which should be included as a standard feature for the PS3.

And yes, the PS3 updates are slow as hell.

See my thread I posted a couple years ago:

It's definitely not convenient that the PSN is slow on so many networks and network configurations, but perhaps these steps may help you out. In case any links are broken in the original post, just search around google for "privoxy" (a program to use) along with the PSN. I can easily pull 1MB/s or greater download speeds on what used to be a slow network now.

I know quite a few people with PS3's, and none are having to update "weekly". I'm also on a 1.5mb connection using wireless from my router and the last update only took a few minutes. It was only a few mb's, if it took you 20min and you are actually updating weekly, then you have serious problems. Or maybe you are just overstating the problem?

Everybody's network config is different so different people will have different results. My brother gets really slow updates over Wifi and all of mine are super fast.

So OP is just full of it then.

I didn't start my netflix subscription on there until around valentines day, so I had the Jan 27th one. Then I had the one this weekend. And between them I had something else that I was forced do before logging into Netflix that changed the Netflix interface. It has felt like every week or two I've had something that I've had to do for 20-30 minutes before being able to watch a freaking movie.

I'm not an online gamer with the PS3 so I'm not up to date with everything on day of release. Just a casual offline gamer and fire up netflix on the weekend with my family for something to watch.

I'm really tired of them dicking around with the interface too. The last update brought back the prior PS3 UI, which was fine, except now I can't browse more than the last 5 titles of my Recently Watched. This is a pain as I watch a lot of TV series. Don't get me started on how outdated their Instant Queue concept is. Putting every single title you want to keep track of and eventually watch in a single queue organized by date of insertion? Yeah, that's easy to use (on anything but a PC...)

That one in between was probably an update to the Netflix app itself, which isn't Sony's fault.

I had to update this last weekend and it took around 20 minutes (I think, didn't really pay attention) over Wi-Fi and a 3Mbps internet connection.

I had no idea Netflix was using different interfaces. I'm fairly happy with the one I have right now. I do wish that I could see more than 5 "Recently Watched" because I'm sharing it with my GF and 5-year-old.

I feel your pain... It seems like every time I want to use my PS3 for something other than dvd viewing it needs a 15-20 minute update.

A week or so ago my tivo decided to reboot... why it takes so long, i have no idea. No big deal I thought... I'll just watch netflix w\ my ps3. WRONG!!!

Had to update and then by the time it was done updating the tivo had finally finished booting. It's the biggest down side to the PS3. If I want to play some street fighter later on, I'm 99% sure it will make me update and then by the time it's done updating I will have decided not to waste more time playing.

Yeh, I've had three different looks in the last month. With every update it's got a different navigation interface.
