Netflix blows

I'm looking at my dad's Netflix selection. Death Wish 1, 2 ,3 The Langoliers, Titanic, Scream, Rocky 1, 2, 3 MIB 1,2 Juice, Over the Top, Terminator, etc... What do these movies have in common? They are all old. Death Wish is almost 30 years. I even think most of the actors are now dead.

I noticed a few movies that were actually released this century. Not many though.

Does anyone here have Netflix? Do you feel the same? How many times can you watch Death Wish?

For $8 soon to be $9 it's a bargain for how much you get to watch. Of course it's all old stuff, movie companies would never let their new movies go to a streaming service like this, especially since it's not their own streaming service. It's not Netflix's fault.

That's true. I guess I shouldn't be too hard on them. You can't beat $8 a month for unlimited entertainment.

I do like their documentary section, and Death Wish is actually a great film!

No commercials either. I have both Amazon Prime and Netflix, so it helps. I paid 50$ extra a month for cable and watched nothing because whenever I had time to watch something, nothing I wanted to watch was ever on. One question you need to ask yourself is, what would you watch if you had cable??

My roommate has Hulu plus and pays for it and they still show commercials. It pisses him off so much.

ROFL, that's why I stay away from Hulu. Hulu is also owned by Comcast, so it makes sense. I pay for a VPN to get stuff early if there is something that I really need to watch right away.

Movie rights are really expensive, not much Netflix can do but pander to their users.

And most of their users binge on TV shows, which are much easier to license. Netflix has a very robust library of shows if you start looking for them.

Try instantwatcher.com

Here's how to get a list of movies and television shows released in the years 2012-2014 that were certified fresh on rotten tomatoes that are available for streaming.

Go to instantwatcher.com. Click the "all release years" link at the top. Click "2014". Change the first date box to "2012". Select "movies only", and "RT fresh" in two drop down menus to the left of the date boxes.

192 movies. All released in the last two years. All critically acclaimed.

I have Netflix, watch tons of old stuff. Netflix is trying to get the best bang for their buck in licensing while still providing content their subscribers will want.

I have so much stuff I want to get caught up on, Netflix is perfect.

Between Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video, I get plenty of new material as well.

However, for me, I have a specific qualifier: I don't want to watch too much that is new on streaming... I want Blu-ray. If I don't buy or rent the disc, I'll stream. Rarely, I'll go to Vudu for a quality stream/on-demand rental. I have specific interests and delivery methods - I've got the services I want for the reasons I want, including cable. That one, cable, mostly because I'm impatient. Most TV series and stuff I miss when it airs, but there are a few I do want to watch as they air, week by week. Most I end up binge watching.
Like Game of Thrones - but I actually just started reading the first book... I've been wanting to read before watching. Otherwise, I'd never read them. I can't watch then read.

How could you wish for more when you get:

- Iron Sky - exclusive director's cut with even more SPACE NAZIS!
- John Dies at the End. from the creator of Phantasm
- Upside Down, the best alternate-universe love story to include double gravity
- two different Detective Dee movies, plus Woochi and Wu Dang
- 20 or 30 Jason Statham movies where he takes vengeance on someone for something or other

It sounds like you haven't actually looked through their selection, or you only like Redbox top 40 movies. For those you need to add the DVD/blu-ray plan.

I have Netflix and HBO Nordic. Kind of like HBO go, but without a TV package. They cost the same here in Denmark, but I use the US netflix which is about 30% cheaper than the Danish. I only use them for series, not their crappy movie selection. I use HBO more than Netflix though.

That site is awesome! Thanks for the reference. However, doing what you suggested I get only around 18 movies.

Edit: NM, musta been the way I was sorting it. I see 196 now.

I've had Netflix for ages but am about to buy prime mainly because I want to watch 24 again. I realized it had been removed from my Netflix queue and just read that Amazon snatched up exclusivity, likely due to the show coming back on and people like me deciding we want to watch the old series again. Good play.

For those who have both, how does Amazon compare (or complement) Netflix? Is PQ comparable? Selection? 2-day shipping is obviously something Netflix doesn't offer so that's a plus.

I just bought Prime, mostly for the 2 day shipping. We watch some stuff on prime. The service seems to be solid, but I have a 50/5 connect from Comcast which rarely gets saturated.

We watch way more Netflix, Prime's selection is limited comparitively. I will add that we watch lots of kids stuff. Prime has Mr. Rogers. Good clean fun for the kids.

Amazon Prime. It's about the same price and you get free 2 day shipping and book loans added on.

I've been thinking of cancelling Netflix as there are months I just don't watch it. I can just start it again if I want to watch something, and then not auto renew the next month. $8/month isn't much but what's the point when some months I'm getting nothing out of it?

ooh MetallicA Through The Never already on there. I could just leave this on while I work.

Anyway, I like Netflix for documentaries and catching up on tv shows I never caught onto. Currently on Mad Men. This lasts me through many weeks at a time so I think it's worth it. Last night I caught a 19-year old Elisha Cuthbert in a 2001 movie called Lucky Girl (aka My Daughter's Secret Life)... hot.

That's what I did about 2 months ago. Strangely I haven't missed it.
