Netflix Goes Sci-Fi With Its Next Original Series, Sense8

Hot on the heels of Netflix’s original series House Of Cards, the company has announced that it will release a new sci-fi TV series to the platform called Sense8

The show is being developed under the guidance of the Wachowskis, who are responsible for smash hits like the Matrix series of films, V for Vendetta, Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer, as well as J. Michael Straczynski who is the creator behind Changeling, Thor, and Babylon 5.

A group of people around the world are suddenly linked mentally, and must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world's order.

The plot doesn't excite me but its J. Michael Straczynski so it has me at least a little excited.

For some reason this show made me think of the Outer Limits episode where they have like 8 people buried in bunkers around the world that control the nukes or something. The world goes to shit but they don't know it and 1 person at a time is killed. In the end it was like some bug or alien take over. No idea why I thought of that. LOL

It picks up, the woman-on-woman scene was interesting. I'll give it 2-3 episodes to get hooked or at least understand WTF is going on before giving up.

There are rumors that now is the time for a new ST show, but I would imagine it would be more like the reboots.

It takes awhile to get going. I sorta just had it on in the background for the first couple of episodes, but it does get interesting. They dont really do much with the show, although it is watchable. The Korean woman and German are pretty cool. I actually like all the characters, except for the trans woman. Her voice is too distracting, but I like the Dr Who chick. If you get past the first few episodes its decent, but you're not missing anything if you skip it.

its basically a season of buildup foreplay kind of like Season 1 of Heroes, although with a slightly better climax

a season 2 would likely be a lot more intriguing, but they might have made too many mistakes with the first season to win another season

I've been trying to get into it but it's so much filler with back stories of people I haven't been given much reason to care about one way or the other. If anything it feels like they're trying to check as many diversification boxes as they can.

Depends. The people in the group start to interact with each much more. I wanna say episode 4 or so is when I stopped doing other things and started watching the show. Its not until the last few episodes that everyone's skill is fully utilized in a mission and you see what the show could be like. Probably what the show should have been after the first few episodes.

If anything it feels like they're trying to check as many diversification boxes as they can.

The whole thing is people communicating from around the world, which is what I think they are trying to represent.

My only real problem with the show, aside from the pacing, is

I see no reason why the government would see the people as a threat, to the point where they would kill or lobotomize these people without question. No cataloging or recruiting, just lobotomize asap. And why would they have arguably the most powerful sensate leading the organization? There was no backstory about this, it just was, and it was apparently happening for at least a pervious generation. The evil sensate could forcibly control others, so I guess that is powerful. Almost wonder if that is why they are lobotomizing the others, so he can have people to control.

That's a good point that I didn't think of. I'm not sure if they did a good job with showing that though. I still say a lot of this is still filler that would be better off cut. The Bollywood style dance number with the wedding party kept making me think of the rave scene in the Matrix squeal.

from what I understood, its not really the government, its just Whispers who got himself high up enough to get himself enough power to manipulate the world governments, but is otherwise just in charge of his own private organization, an organization that had to rent a van when it went after Angelica. Heck, he's a sensate himself, who is spearheading the hunting down his own kind (and then using them for his own wiles like he did with that one lobotomized guy, so even if the person is a vegetable in their own right, they are still a viable vessel for another sensate - at least one of Whispers' caliber - to fully control)

seemed pretty clear to me that if you take out Whispers, you take out the driving force behind the hunting of sensates, but I suppose they're hoping for a season 2 to carry out such a plot line

of course even if it really is just Whispers behind the hunting down of the sensates, the show doesn't explain why that is happening either. Is he threatened by them? Does he gain more power highlander style? Is it really the governments of the world that fear them and thus have worked out a deal with Whispers?

I was under the impression that the group was still learning about their abilities, and thus couldn't exactly communicate at will just yet, and that it wasn't until the last episode that they were all powerful enough to do enough together to get the job done. Heck, even in that last episode we see Will who is unfamiliar with Lito and asks for a reminder of who he is, and then Lito reminds him of the "sex" that they had during that crazy mental orgy most of the group shared...and the two that seem to have share the biggest/strongest connection is Will and Riley, and it seemed that once they physically touched each other they were able to fully realize that connection

but yeah, there are still a ton of unanswered questions about their abilities

the best explanation I can think of for why they didn't try to kill Whispers is because the group is just too new, and that by the end it was just a desperate rescue attempt, and of the two people physically there, Riley was too fucked up to do anything and Will was "infected" by Whispers and thus maybe Whispers could "influence" him enough? Or that as soon as Will made the decision to kill Whipsers, Whispers would know his every move and should at least be able to avoid it if not counter it, but that still shouldn't have stopped Wolfgang from taking over Riley's body and then gunning down Whispers in some sort of ambush, using Will as a diversion, although what ultimately happened would have been the least risky option for keeping everyone safe and alive, but it's still kind of a major shame that the option wasn't even hinted at being a possibility...the way Wolfgang fucked up his cousin and uncle... well, we know that it could be done.

I started it last night after seeing this thread, and watched two episodes so far. It didn't grab me right away but I am enjoying it now and am looking forward to watching an episode or two tonight and seeing what happens next.
