Starts November 20 with all 13 episodes at once as per Netflix usual releases.

Netflix is expanding on the success of Daredevil adding Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) to the mix. This show looks super dark, possibly WAY more the DD. I wasn't aware of this character but the background is great. Basically a super hero broken by Killgrave, the purple man (David Tennant) who has the power of mind control.

Slightly spoilerish info on Jessica Jones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKPzkWurAAo

Later they will add Luke Cage and Iron Fist to make the Defenders.

I'm already in on this, big time.

Luke Cage and Iron Fist were heros for hire when I used to read marvel mags.

She was pretty good in Breaking Bad & Netflix did a good job on Daredevil, so +1 for more comic book shows!

From reading about this show a bit it seems they are making the Defenders deal with street level problems while the Avengers deal with global/interplanetary issues. That makes a great divide for TV(netflix)/movies, get your epic arcs in the movies, and day to day issues for the more frequent TV shows.

Heroes for hire sounds about right. I'm guessing the black guy in the preview is Luke Cage? Not really familiar with any of these 4 outside DD.

So Jessica Jones can fly but doesn't like to (air sickness?), or can't very well. I love the idea of a seriously flawed hero, and depending on what they include with her past interaction with Killgrave, she's VERY flawed.

Interesting reading some more on it, they mention that as far as Netflix goes, it is very freeing. No pilot, feedback, adjust, repeat endlessly. They shoot in their own little bubble, the whole series (within the confines of Marvel's limits, in this case) and that's it.

Comparing AoS to DD, all I can say is "GOOD!"

They also mentioned that Marvel's restrictions basically boiled down to no nudity, and don't say the f-word.

Yeah, looks like he is Luke Cage, and he will be getting his own series later as well.

More reading for me as I catch up on all the stuff I have no clue about in comics (about 98% I think).

(I really like that they [Marvel] seem to usually follow a relatively recent, like 80s or later, main thread for most character, but have no compulsions about cherry picking cool stuff from other arcs or subtle changes to make things mesh. But tons and tons of cool treats to track down.)

I am absolutely loving the Marvel-Netflix partnership, and expect the whole lot of shows that make up The Defenders story to be thrilling and nearly perfect.

I loved Daredevil, and it looks like they are going to make Jessica Jones a great show too. I do like how Netflix is very hands off, I have heard that they are definitely a creative artist's favorite network/distributor due to how much they stay out of the way. The Wachowski's said as much I believe.

Weird, because the pilot for this one is already semi-famous for a rather rough lesbian sex scene.

Oh, and I like Christine Ritter. If anyone hasn't seen "Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23," it's a decent comedy, available on Netflix last I checked (USA or FX show, I think). It also has James Vanderbeek playing a TV version of himself. It's pretty awesome.

anyone else feels this new release format (all episodes at once) is counterproductive?
i tend to binge on a show and get sick around half the first season.

I have a love hate relationship with it for sure. I wouldn't go so far to say counterproductive, they have been successful with it, but it does make water cooler talk hard because everyone is on different episodes with that one guy who binge watched it all in one sitting spoiling shit.

@DigDog Control yourself? Do what is best for you. Do you eat everything at a buffet?
Slow and savor is best. IMHO also so watch at your pace, not availability.

I usually take in 2-3 episodes in a sitting, then take a week or so off (just my schedule), so it works for me.

Meh, should've made an Iron Fist or Luke Cage series instead of JJ. They are much more interesting characters to me and would've had more of a following than JJ among (mostly male) comic book fans. I may check this out if I'm absolutely bored, and only to see how they incorporate IF/LC.

They are creating an Iron Fist series, as well as a Luke Cage series. Then they are capping it all with a series entitled The Defenders.

Can you just admit you hate that it's a series about a lead woman?

Jessica Jones is an odd story line. Should make for a good show. She's basically a reluctant Superman that doesn't know what she can and can't do.

Yeah, it's not an either/or at this point. I'm guessing they started with DD and had the other 3 on option. Once DD hit big, renewed it and exercised the options for the rest of the Defenders.

Luke Cage is already in filming, 2016 release

Iron Fist hasn't started from what I'm reading, with rumors they aren't sure what direction to take it yet, but it's already listed on Netflix.

No, she's a boring superhero but I do think that most female superheroes/characters are lame. For example -
She-Hulk
Ms. Marvel
Tigra
Namora/Namorita
Sue Richards
Wasp
Scarlet Witch
Spider-Woman
Dagger
Rescue (Iron Man's g/f's suit)
Medusa
Supergirl
Batgirl (however, her Oracle alias would NOT be lame)
Miss America
Jubilee
Dazzler
Squirrel Girl
Rainbow Girl

Decent female superheroes/characters:
Mystique
Rachel Summers
Storm
Elektra (tied into DD Netflix)
Psylocke
Gamora
Rogue
Caiera
Kitty Pryde

I'd like to see a series about any of the above. JJ falls into the lame category, she got her powers from a car crash into radioactive chemicals. Yes, even 50 something years later (she was recently created in 2010) writers are biting off the spiderman origin except even lamer. However, the Purple Man incarnation may be fun.

Also this series is changing source material, i.e. characters that were men into women.
According to Buzzfeed, at New York Comic Con this weekend it was announced that Moss would portray comic book character Jeryn Hogarth in Netflix’s Jessica Jones. Fans of the comics will know that Hogarth is a lawyer – as well as a businessman – who works with Iron Fist. Especially astute fans will recognize that this represents a fairly substantial shift from the source material, as the character of Hogarth has consistently been portrayed as a male character over the years.
...
Such a decision could also come as a result of the cry for more diversity within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

lol, giving in to PC whiners again.

You guys realize that Melissa Rosenberg (yes, of Twilight fame) is the producer and SJ Clarkson (Orange is the New Black) is the director for the first couple episodes? While OITNB was mindless entertainment, it wasn't anything special. Twilight, lame as fuck. Now she did do Dexter so there is some hope.

This could be a great series, but it's not anywhere near the top of my list whereas Luke Cage and Iron Fist will be. Daredevil was pretty dam good so Marvel/Netflix has the chops to pull something boring like this off, much like Marvel actually made Antman into a half decent flick (despite the fact that Antman is slightly lame).
